The tecu salamander is the strongest salamander that can be caught using a net trap and the Hunter skill at level 79, granting 344 Hunter experience, which can be found south-east of Ralos' Rise. Catching a matured tecu salamander is rare, as players often receive immature tecu salamanders instead; when an adult is captured, a message in the game chat will state The salamander is fully grown, you could use this as a weapon.

Tecu salamanders require level 80 Attack, Magic, and Ranged to wield. Irit tar is used as ammunition for the salamander. It is the best salamander to use for the two salamander-required Combat Achievements: The Worst Ranged Weapon and More than just a ranged weapon.

Despite being able to perform Magic and Ranged attacks, this weapon requires the user to be in the opponent's melee distance to attack, potentially reducing the practicality of the two attack styles. However, it can be used to attack enemies from behind fences, and can also attack enemies in diagonal squares, meaning that safespotting is still possible.

When using the Scorch (Slash) and Blaze (Magic) attack styles, the attack speed is 5. When using the Flare (Range) attack style, the attack speed is 4, which is similar in concept to the Rapid style of most ranged weapons, and it will use standard[1] ranged defence, similar to bows.

Warning: This is a live creature; if unprotected it will run away when you die. Should this happen, you will need to buy or catch a new one.

Chance to hit

Each attack style uses its own respective attack bonus (Slash, Range, Magic) when calculating a successful hit. Players looking to use two or more attack styles should take care in selecting equipment that does not penalize those attack bonuses.

Maximum hit

For melee mode the strength bonus of the salamander is used, which is 91 (nearly the same as a leaf-bladed battleaxe).

For ranged mode the ranged strength bonus of the tar is used to decide the maximum hit. The tecu salamander uses irit tars which have a ranged strength bonus of 60 (same as dragon arrows).

The maximum hit for magic mode uses the "magic damage bonus" of the salamander. This bonus is not visible in the equipment stats, but is equal to 104 for the tecu salamander. Damage boosting items such as the Slayer helmet (i) and occult necklace can be used to increase the max hit.

The max hit (Hitmax) formula for salamanders is as shown in fig.1, where "Magic" is your visible magic level and "Bonus" is the "magic strength bonus" for the salamander, in this case 104. This gives us the formula for the tecu salamander as shown in fig.2.

The table below shows maximum hits from level 80 to level 125. Like all other magic attacks, the max hit damage can be increased by using magic damage boosting equipment.

Trivia

  • Salamanders have a unique sound when equipping them.
  • The tecu salamander may be named after the tegu lizard, which are large reptiles native to south and central America, regions which Varlamore draws many inspirations from.
  • The design for the tecu salamander was inspired by the eastern collared lizard.
