Dying
A player dying after reaching 0 Hitpoints.

Death occurs when a player's Hitpoints reach zero; a message in the Chat Interface will inform them: Oh dear, you are dead!. Death can also occur when alternative criteria are met, such as being completely frozen at the Wintertodt which causes the player's death despite not losing any Hitpoints. After death, the player will respawn at another location potentially deal with further consequences, such as losing or breaking some items.

Unsafe and safe deaths

Deaths are often classified as either unsafe/dangerous or safe. However, these terms depend on the context; deaths can have various consequences depending on the circumstances. Generally:

  • A death is considered unsafe for Hardcore Ironmen if it will result in the loss of their status (or a pooled life in the case of Hardcore Group Ironmen), and safe if it doesn't. Some activities that are safe for Hardcore Ironmen are unsafe for Hardcore Group Ironmen.
  • A death is considered unsafe for your items if it will result in your items being broken, sent to a deathbank, left on your grave, or dropped to another player; and the death is considered safe for your items if it doesn't affect them.

Deaths in most parts of the game are considered unsafe, while some minigames or activities allow deaths without extra penalty. For more information on items kept or lost upon death, see Items Kept on Death.

Death animation

Death overrides

The Death Animations interface.

Animation overrides are available for dying, which can be toggled by speaking to Death in his office and asking him to change how you die.

The interface allows players to select one or more animations that play out upon death. If multiple are selected, one of the selected animations will be chosen at random.

Name Unlocked by Animation
Leagues IV - Trailblazer Reloaded Unlocked upon consuming the Trailblazer reloaded death scroll, which can be bought as a Trailblazer Reloaded League reward.
Leagues V - Raging Echoes Unlocked upon consuming the Raging echoes death scroll, which can be bought as a Raging Echoes League reward.

Unique deaths
