The Wintertodt ( win-ter-tod[1]) is a cooperative minigame-style boss that is fought using skills rather than combat. It is imprisoned behind the Doors of Dinh within the Northern Tundras of Great Kourend. 50 Firemaking is required to fight the Wintertodt, with players assisting the Order of the Sacred Flame by keeping braziers lit and pyromancers alive to defeat it.

As the Wintertodt is a boss, dying here is unsafe. The normal rules for loss of items apply, and Hardcore Ironmen will lose their Hardcore status on death.

During the encounter, players earn points in order to search the reward cart within the Wintertodt Camp for a variety of supplies and unique drops. A minimum of 500 points is required to search it, with additional Firemaking experience also awarded upon reaching this threshold. The more points earned, the greater the chance of receiving additional rewards.

Ironmen are eligible for rewards from Wintertodt when defeating it alongside other players.

The activity is popular as a lower-intensity Firemaking training method compared to burning logs, and offers unique drops such as the Pyromancer set, Tome of fire, and Bruma torch.

Subduing the Wintertodt while earning at least 500 points is a requirement for the medium Kourend & Kebos Diary.

History

The Doors of Dinh continue to seal the Winter Beast to this day.

While it is not clear what the Wintertodt is, there are multiple theories by various people in the Wintertodt Camp. Ignisia believes it to be an evil spirit,[2] Ish the Navigator believes it felt the power of the Dark Altar and attacked Great Kourend to seek it,[3] while Undor believes it to be a powerful fire spirit.[4]

During the 2nd decade (1,400 years ago), the Wintertodt (known back then as the Winter Beast) ravaged the lands north of Kourend, causing them to experience perpetual winter, with livestock and crops freezing. It continued to ravage the Northern Tundras for another three decades, with Great Kourend's attempts to subdue it unsuccessful.

On 1,778 - 5 (1,360 years ago), fearing the Winter Beast might eventually ravage the kingdom, Lord Arceuus I ordered the construction of the Arceuus Library,[5] filled with texts, documents, and research from all cities, to preserve the history of Great Kourend. Meanwhile, the most important texts were stored in the Library Historical Archive, a repurposed chamber of the Tower of Magic, for further study and additional protection.

On 1,748 - 7 (1,340 years ago), a master Lovakengj smith named Dinh formulated a plan to defeat the Winter Beast. Meeting with the Order of the Sacred Flame, Dinh believed that the roots of the Bruma tree, a magical tree lying within the heart of the Northern Tundras, could emit the heat required to subdue the Winter Beast. Dinh proposed to construct a large prison in which to lure the Beast in and seal it with a large set of doors made from various materials, including lovakite and bark from the Bruma tree, with enchantments placed by the Order.[6]

With Lord Lovakengj II approving of the plans, the prison's construction was completed 800 days later, with known casualties of sixteen Order members and two scouts. On 2,548 - 7, after five decades, the Winter Beast was successfully imprisoned and sealed behind the Doors of Dinh,[7] with Lord Lovakengj II declaring the day as Winter's End.

Over a thousand years later, the Doors have begun to fail due to being damaged by someone or something, creating a small hole in the doors. Due to this, the Wintertodt has been drawing a small amount of power into the prison.[8] This hole is fixed by Undor during The Forsaken Tower quest after being given Dinh's hammer. Despite this, the doors were already damaged for such a time that the Wintertodt has already gained a lot of power,[9] and Undor believes that it will be many years before things return to normal.[10]

It is later revealed in A Kingdom Divided that the doors were sabotaged by one of the Pyromancers sent to subdue the winter beast, with collusion from Xamphur, Xeric's closest ally. It is not known what interested Xamphur, but during the quest, the Tasakaal create a shielding potion for the adventurer to apply to the doors to prevent further damage.

Transportation

There are four main methods for travelling to the Wintertodt camp in order to enter the Doors of Dinh. These options, ordered from fast to slow, are:

  • Players can reach the camp via games necklace, provided they have already taken Veos' ship to Great Kourend once.
  • Players can choose the Northern Tundras option in the Lovakengj Minecart Network which brings them just south-east of Wintertodt.
  • Players can use the fairy ring code CIS and walk west along the path, provided they have visited Great Kourend previously through some other means.
  • Players can use the Arceuus Home Teleport by switching to the Arceuus spellbook by speaking with Tyss. This can be done with no requirements and is particularly useful for players who chose to start their Ironman accounts by training at Wintertodt, as there are few fast travel methods at low levels for iron accounts.

Bank chest

There is a tent with a bank chest just east of the game necklace teleport location. Players can use this bank to prepare for the fight, or as a close bank to a teleport for tasks such as Slayer and Farming runs. Note that players fighting the Wintertodt will need to leave the game to use the bank.

Requirements

Warm clothing

Throughout the fight, the player will take intermittent passive damage as the cold of the Wintertodt begins to seep into their bones. This passive damage is scaled to each player's Firemaking level as well as the number of braziers that are currently lit. Wearing warm or winter-themed equipment will reduce the damage taken.

Four of these warm items need to be equipped to receive the maximum damage-reduction. If the player is not wearing a minimum of four pieces, upon entering the prison, a game message will appear stating "You feel the cold wind strike you as you enter; perhaps you should find some warmer clothes."

Fighting the Wintertodt

Players fighting the Wintertodt.

The Wintertodt cannot be attacked by conventional combat. Instead, players must help the pyromancers drain its energy by lighting and maintaining the braziers around the prison. To do this, players must chop the roots of the bruma tree found near the braziers to obtain bruma roots, optionally fletch them with a knife into more potent bruma kindling, then add them to the burning braziers.

Warmth Meter

The warmth meter, visible on the HUD at the top left of the player's game client, acts as the player's health when inside the prison. Dropping to 0% warmth will cause instant death. Players can restore their warmth by eating any type of food that heals at least 4 Hitpoints (such as a bite of cake), which will restore 35% warmth, or by drinking a dose of rejuvenation potion, which will restore 30% warmth. Foods which heal in two parts such as hunter meat will restore warmth twice for a total of 70%. Players will also naturally regenerate 8% warmth per minute, with an additional 1% regenerated for each piece of warm clothing worn (up to 4). Various health regeneration methods, such as Hitpoints regenerating items, Rapid Heal, and Heal Other, will further aid warmth regeneration. A ring of life will activate if warmth drops below 10%. A Phoenix Necklace will also activate at 20% or less and restore Warmth.

Rejuvenation potions can easily be made inside the prison, and they are also used to heal the pyromancers whenever they are damaged or incapacitated. If Druidic Ritual has not been completed, Brew'ma can combine the ingredients on the player's behalf.

Damaging the Wintertodt

The Wintertodt will be weakened by the power of the bruma flames that are channeled by the pyromancers. Thus it is important to keep the braziers lit and the pyromancers alive in order to defeat it. The braziers can be lit with a tinderbox or bruma torch and repaired with a hammer. The flames can be fueled by adding bruma roots or bruma kindling, though this does not cause the fight to progress any faster.

Each pyromancer only has 14 health and will be incapacitated after taking two hits from the Wintertodt. If a pyromancer falls to 0 health, she cannot continue draining the Wintertodt's energy, nor can her brazier be relit, until a player heals her. Pyromancers can be fully healed via their "Help" option, requiring one dose of rejuvenation potion.

Wintertodt's attacks

The area safe from the Wintertodt's attacks.

The Wintertodt uses five kinds of attacks during the fight:

  • Standard attack - All individual players will take periodic damage as the cold of the Wintertodt begins to seep into their bones. The damage taken is based on the player's total Firemaking level, and is drastically reduced while wearing warm clothing.
  • Area attack - Heavy snow will occasionally appear over a 3x3 area centred on a specific player as a warning, then fall to the ground causing damage to all players currently in the 3x3 area.
  • Brazier heavy attack - Heavy snow will occasionally appear over a brazier as a warning, then the brazier will shatter. Players standing directly next to a brazier when it shatters will take damage.
  • Brazier light attack - Light snow will occasionally appear over a brazier as a warning, then it will extinguish. This does not cause damage.
  • Pyromancer attack - Light snow will occasionally appear over an individual pyromancer as a warning, then she will take damage. This is not dangerous to other players.

The amount of time between these attacks is random[11] but the frequency significantly depends on the Wintertodt's remaining energy. Standard attacks will be more common at first; later in the fight, brazier and pyromancer attacks will be more common.

HUD

The HUD for the boss.

Upon entering the Wintertodt area, a HUD will appear in the top left of the screen. There are several icons on the HUD:

  • Unlit fire - The brazier has not yet been lit.
  • Lit fire - The brazier has been lit.
  • Crafting icon - The brazier has been damaged and needs to be repaired.
  • Red wizard hat - The pyromancer at that brazier has been incapacitated and needs to be healed.

Reward points

Players earn points based on the activities they perform during the battle. Logging out, or leaving the prison before the end of a round will result in the loss of all points for the current round.

The following activities provide points:

Activity Skills involved Points
Lighting a brazier Firemaking 25
Adding Bruma roots to a brazier Woodcutting /Firemaking 10
Adding Bruma kindling to a brazier Woodcutting /Fletching /Firemaking 25
Repairing a destroyed brazier Construction 25
Healing a pyromancer Herblore 75

The rewards for defeating the Wintertodt are based on the player's points acquired throughout the fight. Players must collect a minimum of 500 points to be rewarded anything for their efforts. The reward will consist of the ability to search the Reward Cart (see rewards section below) and Firemaking experience. If the player does not achieve 500 points, a chat message will state "You did not earn enough points to be worthy of a gift from the citizens of Kourend this time."

There is no current known limit to the number of rewards points that can be earned in a single fight.

Reward experience

Players earn experience based on the activities they perform during the battle. The following activities provide experience as a multiple of the player's current level (for example, with level 50 Firemaking, lighting a brazier with a multiplier of 6x will reward 300 Firemaking experience):

Activity Skill rewarded Level multiplier
Lighting a brazier Firemaking 6x
Cutting a bruma root Woodcutting 0.3x
Feeding a bruma root Firemaking 3x
Fletching a bruma root Fletching 0.6x
Feeding a bruma kindling Firemaking 3.8x
Fixing a broken brazier Construction 4x
Creating a rejuvenation potion Herblore 0.1x
Subduing the Wintertodt with 500+ points Firemaking 100x

Rewards

Succeeding in subduing the Wintertodt with a minimum of 500 points will reward players with Firemaking experience (Firemaking level * 100), as well as being owed at least two rewards from the reward cart. Every 500 additional points will guarantee an extra reward owed. Additional points over each 500 point threshold give a linearly scaled percentage chance for an extra reward. For example, 1200 points would guarantee 3 rewards plus a 200/500 (40%) chance of getting a fourth reward. The reward cart can hold a maximum of 8,000 rewards.

The player's skill levels will determine the rewards the player gets from searching the cart. High levelled players will get rarer rewards, with lower levelled rewards becoming less common the higher the player's level in that skill is. At the highest point, low levelled rewards are removed from the drop table. While players with low levels in those skills can get rare rewards, the drop rate is very low. The herb, ore, fish, uncut gem, seed drops, and logs are based on the player's Herblore, Mining, Fishing, Crafting, Farming, and Woodcutting levels respectively,[12] at the time of searching the cart.

Developers

Trivia

  • Upon release, the Wintertodt's table was much more profitable and was changed several days after release. The Wintertodt's drop table was soon nerfed yet again due to player feedback on its still-generous reward table, primarily in seeds such as ranarr (the increased supply of which resulted in their price crashing). The new drops became based on the player's levels in the skills the items were related to.
  • When you examine the Doors of Dinh, it will say "Hold the door!". This is a reference to S06E05 "The Door" from the HBO show Game of Thrones.
  • The "dying" animation of Pyromancers next to braziers is identical to that of Lunar Spell Dream.
  • On 25 October 2024 Mod Kirby referenced a "Red Herring"[14] recently added to the Wintertodt during the recent activity update on 9 October 2024. What this references is currently unknown.
  • It is not possible to cast High Level Alchemy inside the Wintertodt area while it is active. Attempting to do so produces the message, "That magic would interfere with the pyromancer's and is not permitted here." Perhaps this is intended to prevent players from reaching the minimum point threshold and then ignoring the boss instead of contributing.
  • After the release of the warmth meter on 9 October 2024, players who had entered the Wintertodt prior to that date will receive the following warning message upon entering: "Please be aware that the Wintertodt has been modified since your last encounter; for full details, please visit our website for the news article dated October 2024, or consult the Old School Runescape Wiki."
