The Doom of Mokhaiotl, also referred to as Osto-Ayak, is a giant insect-like, demonic boss found in the Ruins of Mokhaiotl, which is accessed during The Final Dawn quest, deep beneath the Tlati Rainforest.

The Doom is described as a delve boss, sharing similarities to RuneScape 3's streaking mechanics: upon defeating the Doom, it will descend deeper underground, with each "delve level" increasing the difficulty of the fight up to delve level 8. Players can also continue to deeper delves, which will have the same mechanics and difficulty as level 8. The initial delve levels are stated by the boss's developers to be comparable to the Corrupted Gauntlet, with the deepest delve levels requiring a good understanding of game mechanics and "the ability to stay cool when things get really, really tough".[1]

Defeating the Doom of Mokhaiotl at deeper delve levels increases the chance to receive its unique drops, starting from delve 2, and an additional drop is added to the table until delve 4. The drop rate of these items will increase until delve 9, at which they are rolled at their highest possible rate.

After defeating the Doom, the player can choose to continue their pursuit or leave and claim their rewards. If the player descends into a deeper delve level and is killed by the Doom, they will forfeit all accumulated drops from that run. Claiming the rewards, dying to the boss, or teleporting out will reset the delve level back to 1. Attempting to delve deeper upon receiving a unique reward will prompt a warning message.

Drops from the Doom of Mokhaiotl include the Mokhaiotl cloth, used to upgrade the tormented bracelet into the confliction gauntlets, the eye of ayak, a 3-tick powered staff, and the avernic treads, a pair of hybrid boots with improved offensive and defensive bonuses over aranea boots and can be further upgraded with the Cerberus boots (primordial, eternal and pegasian) to create best-in-slot combat boots.

A scoreboard found in the lobby area leading up to the Doom can be found to the east side of the wall, recording the player and global records against the boss.

History

Known to the Old Ones as Osto-Ayak, which translates to "Under-Creature", the origin of the demonic insectoid is not known. What is known is that it was in a deep slumber beneath the earth, and was inadvertently awoken when construction of Mokhaiotl was well underway by human and dwarven refugees, who fled the mainland during the God Wars. The Kuhu sacrificed themselves to give the builders time to escape.[2]

While various measures had already been put in place to protect the knowledge that would have been stored in Mokhaiotl, the Doom made no attempt to leave the premises, where it would remain isolated for an unknown amount of time, since the cavern had been sealed off and protective measures put in place, though it would consume anything unfortunate enough to disturb it, as indicated with various remains and carcasses scattered across its habitat.

Eventually, during the events of the Final Dawn, its rest is disturbed once again with the death of Metzli, Teokan of Ranul, and it presumably consumes her corpse after the adventurer, Prince Itzla Arkan, and Furia Tullus left Mokhaiotl, though it appears to have made no attempt to leave the surrounding area.

Fight overview

As a delve boss, pursuing the Doom of Mokhaiotl into deeper delve levels will increase the difficulty of the fight, up to delve level 8. In its most basic form (delve level 1), the Doom attacks with ranged and magic similar to that of the Leviathan; orbs from a distance, with blue being magic and green being ranged, blocked by praying before impact and a melee attack if directly next to it. Additionally, it will also use a rock throw attack which disables protection prayers upon shattering, then launching a magic or ranged projectile. Around a minute into the fight, it will then prepare a shockwave attack that the player must counter by making use of the volatile earth around the area.

As the player descends down the burrow hole, the Doom of Mokhaiotl's health slightly increases; the rest of its stats stay the same. Additionally, new mechanics are added and existing mechanics are enhanced upon, making the fight more challenging. After clearing delve 8, the player is awarded a "deep delve" count, and players can continue descending further down. These subsequent levels are level 8 in theory, though the Doom's health is reduced to 625 and hazards from previous levels continue to persist which practically make it more difficult.

Similar to Yama, players who die fighting the Doom are sent back to the lobby area instead of their respawn point, where their graves are also located. Players will have their reclamation fee reduced by 75% until they have 20 total delves, after which the standard death cost will apply.

  • Drops

The quantities for all drops below, aside from uniques, are shown for delve level 3, due to the drop table's unique nature. See the table in the "Mechanics" section to find how quantities vary with delve level.

    The Doom reward interface.

After defeating the Doom of Mokhaiotl, it will burrow down into the next level. Upon interacting with the burrow hole the Doom leaves behind, players are shown a list of rewards and given the option to claim them and leave, or to risk them by continuing the pursuit.

Similarly to the Fortis Colosseum, unique drops become available after completing specific delve levels, and the rates of all eligible uniques have their drop rates increased as the player descends further down.

If the player completes a delve but leaves without claiming their loot, a chest across from the scoreboard can be searched to collect any unclaimed rewards.

    Mechanics

Each delve level rolls once on the regular loot table (with additional guaranteed demon tears at certain delve levels), modifying them by using the following equation:

, where is the quantity received at delve and is the quantity multiplier as listed in the table below. removes anything after a decimal point, rounding up for negative numbers and down for positive ones.

As such, delve levels modify most of the common drops by rolling for an item, choosing a quantity as if it were level 3, multiplying it by the quantity multiplier at the given delve level, truncating the product, then adding it to the original quantity. For example, a player is equally likely to receive 2, 3, or 4 dragon platelegs at delve level 3. Delve level 2 has a -0.35x quantity multiplier, which gives possible quantities of 2, 2, and 3, respectively, meaning there is a 2/3 chance to receive two sets and a 1/3 chance to receive three sets.

For uniques, each one has a minimum delve level that must be completed in order for it to be rolled, with their drop rates increasing the deeper the delve level. If a unique drop is rolled (including Dom, if it has not been logged yet), a light will emerge from the burrow hole, and attempting to descend deeper will result in the player being warned if they intend to risk the item.

    Changes

    Date Changes
    6 May 2026
    (Update)

During the orb phase of the Doom of Mokhaiotl, striking a volatile earth with double-hitting weapons will no longer cause the orb to spawn and despawn.

    1 October 2025
    (Update)

Sunfire splinters have been removed from the Doom of Mokhaiotl's loot table.

    3 September 2025
    (Update)
    • Combat Achievements have been added for the Doom of Mokhaiotl. As criteria for the Doom's speed tasks were tracked on release, these were automatically completed upon opening the Combat Achievements interface.
    • The "Attack" option on all volatile earth is now hidden when the earthen shield spawns.
    • The "Attack" option on demonic larvae is now hidden until their spawn animation finishes.
    20 August 2025
    (Update)
    • Standard attacks from the Doom after a melee punish will now take into account rock throw projectiles, ensuring that two styles will never overlap (i.e. a melee projectile when a magic projectile from the rock throw is inbound). This still means that there are two attacks of the same style inbound if the player melee punishes too early, thus missing the prayer will result in the full impact of both attacks.
    • Attacks that are nulled during the transition to the Doom's shielded form will now instead count as damage towards the shield, even if the damage came from a non-demonbane weapon.
    • A bug in which the Doom's burrowed form deals trample damage whilst zooming diagonally, even if the player is not standing within its path, has been fixed.
    • Rocks which fall when the Doom begins to burrow will no longer disappear when landing on acid blood.
    • Players will no longer get pushed out-of-bounds when the burrow hole spawns in a corner.
    • The burrow hole will no longer sparkle when a player receives a duplicate pet drop.
    13 August 2025
    (Update)
    • Further altered the shape of the Ranged projectile to ensure it appears noticeably different to Melee.
    • Fixed a bug where valuable loot drops received from the Doom of Mokhaiotl did not broadcast to the clan chat.
    8 August 2025
    Hotfix
    • The Doom's transition to the shielded phase is now triggered by his attack timer instead of on-hit. To avoid instant phase transitions, he will also wait for 2 attacks after the last orb phase before triggering the shield.
    • The Doom can no longer heal unintentionally after firing his beam.
    • Giant larvae will now stay in place when KO damage is incoming, to match the behaviour of small larvae.
    7 August 2025
    Hotfix
    • The holy water effect should now be guaranteed when killing the boss during the melee punish phase.
    • To prevent a bug that allowed the Doom to start a melee punish phase before switching to the blue shield phase a few ticks later, the beam charge during the melee punish phase can no longer be interrupted by grub damage.
    • Larvae no longer despawn and persist into the car phase.
    • The surge potion cooldown timer now pauses between delve levels.

    Development history

The Doom's rewards underwent multiple iterations and revisions due to player feedback. The following is a list of scrapped rewards:

    Trivia

    • The examine text is a reference to the demon spade, a proposed reward from the Doom that was initially pitched as the "demonic digger" before being renamed. The spade was later scrapped.
    • The Doom's design was inspired by in-game demons, the praying mantis, and aggressive mimicry, a form of mimicry used by predators to lure in prey.[3]
    • If the player receives multiple Dom pet drops in one delve, when loot is claimed, the collection log will only add 1 pet to the log instead of the actual amount received.[4]
    • Similarly to Yama, the Doom's killcount is counted differently; rather than kill count, it is "delves completed" and "deep delves completed".
      • Unlike any other boss in Old School RuneScape, the actual "kill count" is the amount of deep delves completed; because of this, the kill count will not show in the player's HiScores until they have completed five deep delves. Since all drops are available on delve 6 and deeper, it is possible to complete the entire log without ever getting a proper kill count for the boss, a trait that it shares with the Chaos Elemental.
    • The Doom had a festive override wearing a santa hat during the 2025 Christmas event.

I took inspiration from demons in game, a Praying Mantis and aggressive mimicry for the the final boss design! A lot of back and forth with animation to ensure the process of creating would be optimal."
