Avernic treads are boots that require level 80 in Defence, Strength, Ranged, and Magic to wear. They are dropped in their base form by the Doom of Mokhaiotl, and can be upgraded into stronger variants.

In their base form, the treads already surpass each of the primordial, eternal, and pegasian boots in accuracy and most defensive bonuses as well as providing a ranged strength bonus. However, they have slightly less strength bonus than the primordial boots and no prayer bonus compared to aranea boots.

The treads can be upgraded into a stronger form by adding one pair of primordial, eternal, and pegasian boots onto them, along with 4,000 demon tears for each boot, for a total of 12,000 demon tears. Once the process starts, the treads become untradeable. Boots are added one at a time and can be added in any order. If upgrading the boots from scratch, players must additionally have 80 Magic and 60 Runecraft, both of which can be boosted.

Upgrading the treads only affects the bonuses of the associated combat style, as follows:

• Primordial boots: +2 Melee Strength
• Pegasian boots: +1 Ranged Strength
• Eternal boots: +1% Magic Damage

Once fully upgraded, the boots become avernic treads (max). The player can restore the original components, receiving the add-on boots back, but any demon tears spent will not be refunded. Likewise, if the boots are lost on PvP death the base treads and the add-on boots will be dropped for the killer and the tears will be lost.

Only upgraded forms of the avernic treads can be stored in the elite STASH hole near the Fountain of Heroes inside the Heroes' Guild instead of dragon boots.

The treads were originally required to have all three boot sets (primordial, pegasian, and eternal), which would be combined with an avernic catalyst. The boots would have had three different recolour options.^[1] Player concerns quickly arose about the requirement of pegasian boots, as ranger boots were much harder to acquire compared to dragon boots and infinity boots, respectively. The new requirements were revealed on 11 March 2025, accounting for player feedback about the treads. Due to the new requirements allowing players to add one boot at a time, the three different recolours were scrapped due to it complicating the work that would have to be done, and was replaced with all upgraded versions of the boots appearing identical to one another.^[2]

• The word "Avernic" refers to a specific race of demons which consists of the more standard demons such as lesser demons, greater demons, and black demons. The other piece of equipment with Avernic in the name, the Avernic defender hilt (used to make the Avernic defender), was created by Avernic demon smiths in their homeworld of Infernus.
  • Based on the treads appearing to have wings and spikes like most Avernic demons do, it is possible that the treads were crafted from the body of a demon, rather than being created by one like the Avernic defender hilt.
