This copy was last processed on . The copied wiki revision is dated .
Skeletal Wyverns are level 72 Slayer monsters found in the Asgarnian Ice Dungeon.
Requirements
- Level
72 to damage skeletal wyverns. This can be boosted.
- Completion of
Elemental Workshop I or II for access to the elemental or mind shields respectively. These shields offer protection from the wyverns' powerful icy breath attack.
- Alternatively, the dragonfire shield, ancient wyvern shield and dragonfire ward also offer the same protection, all requiring having started Dragon Slayer I.
Recommendations
- High combat stats. Although not required, see the skill levels below for an indication of the advised stats:
Transportation
Skeletal wyverns are located in the Asgarnian Ice Dungeon. The entrance to this dungeon may be found south of Port Sarim and north of Mudskipper Point. The quickest ways to travel here are:
- Using the Giantsoul amulet, teleport to Branda and Eldric's Lair and run east.
- From the fairy ring at Mudskipper Point, using the code AIQ, and running north.
- From Rimmington, via the Teleport to House spell or a Rimmington teleport tablet, or Captain Barnaby, and running south-east.
- From Port Sarim, using the spirit tree, an explorer's ring, or the
Port Sarim Rat Pits minigame teleport after the completion of Ratcatchers, then running south(-west).
- From the Port Sarim docks, using a charter ship, or the
Pest Control Minigame Teleport or scrolls, and running west then south.
From the dungeon entrance, climb down the trapdoor, first run north and then run east to find an open space with ice warriors and ice giants. The entrance to the wyverns' lair can be found on the southern wall of this room. Players with level 72 or 82 Agility may use a shortcut before the icy area or right from the dungeon entrance, respectively.
Mechanics
Attack styles
Skeletal wyverns attack with Melee, Ranged and their unique ice breath attack.
- The Melee attack is only used when the player is standing in Melee distance and can hit up to 13. Skeletal wyverns roll their slash accuracy against the player's stab defence when performing a bite or tail swipe attack.[1]
- The Ranged attack has an attack range of 6 tiles and can hit up to 13.
- The ice-breath attack has an attack range of 5 tiles and can hit 50+, although this damage can be drastically reduced to a maximum hit of 10 by the following shields: elemental shield, mind shield, dragonfire shield, ancient wyvern shield, and dragonfire ward.
- This attack will also freeze the player's character for a few seconds. During this period, the character is not able to move or attack.
- There is a 1/7 chance to be frozen while wielding one of the shields listed above.[2]
- The ancient wyvern shield will grant an immunity against this freezing effect.
- Without an appropriate shield, the chance to be frozen by a skeletal wyvern is determined by one's Magic defensive bonuses.[3]
- Antifire potions have no effect.
Tips
Dragonbane weapons
Because skeletal wyverns are considered to be draconic creatures, they are weak against dragonbane weapons. Therefore it is recommended to use a dragon hunter crossbow or dragon hunter lance if any of these weapons are available. They are also one of the few draconic creatures that are affected by the enchanted dragonstone bolt effect, Dragon's breath.
Safespotting
Skeletal wyverns can be safespotted because they have a shorter attack range than players using a crossbow or magic spells. They can be easily safespotted during a Slayer task by standing one tile north-west of Steve/Pieve.
- To safespot skeletal wyverns, first make sure to lose their aggressiveness. Aggressiveness is lost automatically after a player has spent 10 minutes in the same area (i.e. they don't move past a certain invisible border).
- After this time period, attack a wyvern and lure it behind an obstacle (e.g. a wall that is sticking out).
- While the wyvern is stuck behind the obstacle, move out of its attack range to make sure it can't attack the player anymore.
- Now start attacking the wyvern using Magic or Ranged.
Dwarf multicannon
Dwarf multicannon are allowed in the Asgarnian Ice Dungeon, however only in the lower part of the cave; the upper Slayer-exclusive part is a no cannon zone. Cannons will make killing skeletal wyverns faster and the profit from the extra drops often outweigh the cost of the steel cannonballs. Therefore it can be recommended to bring a dwarf multicannon when meleeing skeletal wyverns.
Prayers
If in melee range then Protect from Melee; else if ranged/magic and not safespotting then Protect from Range.
Equipment
This is the best-in-slot available equipment for meleeing skeletal wyverns. The set up shown in this section currently costs approximately 819,456,212 coins. See the table below for an overview of equipment alternatives in case this setup is not accessible or too expensive. Players should pray melee when using melee.
Notes
- Make sure to use the Swipe or Pound attack style when using the dragon hunter lance with Oathplate and Inquisitor, respectively.
Equipment upgrades and downgrades
In this section it is assumed that the player is using the safespotting method to attack the skeletal wyverns. During the first period, while the wyverns are still aggressive, it is necessary to wield a shield that protects the player from the icy breath attacks. However, after they become tolerant of the player, it is advisable to switch to a shield that provides ranged attack bonuses. Always keep the other shield in the inventory, as the wyverns are not always lured correctly behind the obstacles, making them not safespottable and thus able to use their icy breath attacks again.
This is the best-in-slot available equipment for ranging skeletal wyverns. The set up shown in this section currently costs approximately 667,014,885 coins. See the table below for an overview of equipment alternatives in case this setup is not accessible or too expensive.

This equipment is recommended when the player has level 92 Ranged or higher, while not having access to Armadyl equipment, as at this Ranged level it is more effective than (blessed) dragonhide armour.
