The Charter Ships (often simply called charter) are a fleet of merchant ships which form a fairly extensive shipping transport infrastructure across popular docks as well as ports in remote locations, run by a wealthy merchant named Trader Stan and his crew. Players can pay a fee ranging from 200 to 5,200 coins for transportation on the charter ships, depending on the distance between the start and destination.

Transportation time takes only a few seconds. During this, a map of Gielinor is displayed with the destinations labelled, with an animation of a ship travelling between them. The short travel time and wide variety of destinations, including some with few alternate methods of transportations, make charter ships an attractive option compared to other transportation systems. However, some charter ship routes can be significantly more expensive than other methods.

Trader crewmembers stand at the docks of each destination in the charter ships network, and Trader Stan himself is present at the Port Sarim dock. In addition to allowing players to charter the shipping network, the crewmembers also run Trader Stan's Trading Post, a more versatile and exotic form of a general store, which sells many items of interest as well as a few commodities which aren't stocked in specialty stores, such as Tyras helms, which are unavailable anywhere else.

Moving charter ships can be seen traveling between various ports while Sailing, crewed by unique versions of the trader crewmembers. These ships are mostly decorative, though they will stop the player's boat if collided with.

Travelling by charter ship is very convenient for players who can afford it, especially since the release of Sailing. Some of the quickest ways to get to the ships are:

  12. B: Port Piscarilius; entered Great Kourend via Veos
  13. C: Land's End; entered Great Kourend via Veos
  14. D: Civitas illa Fortis; entered Varlamore (unlocked after Children of the Sun)
  15. E: Aldarin; entered Varlamore (unlocked after Children of the Sun)
  16. F: Sunset Coast; entered Varlamore (unlocked after Children of the Sun)
  17. I: The Pandemonium; boarded the Pandemonium during Pandemonium quest
  18. J: The Summer Shore; boarded the Summer Shore during Troubled Tortugans
