Map

Fishing Trawler is a Fishing minigame in which players must prevent Murphy's trawling boat from sinking for five minutes. The minigame can be played at any level, but 15 Fishing is required to receive any rewards.

To play, board the fishing trawler docked at Port Khazard and wait for the next voyage.

On return to the mainland, players who earned enough contribution points during the minigame may search the trawler net to receive an assortment of fish and Fishing experience, with a chance to receive pieces of the angler's outfit.

The activity is notable as the fastest method of earning the angler's outfit. Playing on the official worlds offers a faster and more relaxed route to obtaining the outfit, while playing solo or in small groups can result in more fish and Fishing experience.

Starting a Fishing Trawler expedition is an easy Ardougne Diary task. Catching a manta ray (requiring 81 Fishing) and then cooking it in Port Khazard (requiring 91 Cooking) is an elite Ardougne Diary task.

Starting a game

Only one voyage may be active at a time per server, with the next voyage beginning one minute after the first player boards the ship. If a voyage is in progress, you may wait on the boat for it to finish. The time remaining will be regularly announced by Murphy.

In total, a round takes roughly 6.5 minutes (5 minutes of trawling, 1 minute of docking, and 15 seconds of cutscene at both the start and end of the trawl).

Gameplay

The instructions interface, which can be toggled by speaking to Murphy in Port Khazard.

Note: It is highly recommended to disable Camera motion by selecting the camera icon next to the contribution bar, as the camera sway can make performing actions during the minigame difficult.

An axe, hammer, a number of swamp paste, several ropes, and a bailing bucket are required if participating in all of the activities below. All required items are available in the Khazard General Store. There are also boxes containing bailing buckets, hammers, and bronze axes on the top deck of the ship.

During the trip, there are several activities that players can do to help defend and repair Murphy's ship:

Leaks on the sides of the boat can be repaired using swamp paste. Leaks can be patched up to 1 tile away. If the leaks are not patched quickly enough, the ship will fill with water, which must be bailed back into the sea with a bailing bucket's "bail-with" and "empty" click options.
The fishing net in the stern occasionally gets torn and must be repaired with rope. While the net is torn, it will not catch any fish, so it is advisable to fix a ripped net as quickly as possible. Either of the two net halves can be clicked to fix the entire net. The chance to successfully fix the net depends on the player's Crafting level. Failing to do so will result in a message "You fail to repair the net in the harsh conditions".
An enormous tentacle from a kraken will attack the ship's net and railings, slowing down the rate at which fish are caught. Fighting off the tentacle requires an axe (blessed axe does not work), and repairing damage to the ship's railings requires a hammer. The chance to successfully chop at the kraken's tentacle depends on the axe being used and the player's Woodcutting level.^[1]^[2]

The amount of leaks, torn nets, and kraken encounters scales with the number of players on the trawler.

Losing

The only way to lose is if the water level gets too high before the time is up. The boat will sink, ending the game, and players must climb onto a barrel to return to shore north of Port Khazard near fairy ring DJP. Logging out during a trawl will also return players to this location.

Swimming to shore via the barrel will deal 1-2 damage to the player.

Players can also forfeit by speaking to Murphy and insisting he returns them to shore. This sends the forfeiting player to the barrels as if the boat had sunk, though the game will continue for players remaining on board.

Rewards

Contribution meter

Players must earn at least 50 contribution points to search the Trawler net to receive Fishing experience, saltwater fish, and a chance at a piece of the angler's outfit. Points earned above 50 do not increase the chance of obtaining the outfit. A maximum of 255 points may be earned per game - a full contribution meter will yield 100% more fish compared to the minimum contribution, as well as doubling the chance of receiving the heron pet.

The contribution meter will change colour from red to yellow at 50 points. The meter does not deplete; therefore, players are able to stop contributing after reaching their goal.

^ ^1.0 ^1.1 A POH must be owned in order to receive Construction XP. Players without a house may still fix the broken rail to receive points, but no Construction experience will be gained (this also counts for applying swamp paste to leaks).

Collecting rewards

The trawler net can be found on the Port Khazard dock after a successful voyage. When searching it, boosts cannot be used to obtain higher-tier fish, and drains cannot be used to obtain lower-tier fish. The collection interface allows automatic banking, dropping, or picking up of rewards. There is also a bank chest just west of the trawler net. Closing the rewards interface with items left to collect will cause them to drop on the ground.

Rewards are preserved across hopping worlds or logging out, but boarding a new expedition will destroy any uncollected rewards. A warning dialogue appears if attempting to board the ship with rewards left to claim.

Rates

Fish

Players are rewarded a number of fish equal to the boat's total catch (based on how many players participated, how long the nets were damaged, and how long the ship was slowed down by a kraken) divided by the number of players present at the beginning of the minigame. The type of fish caught is dependent on the player's Fishing level, as shown below. Fishing experience is granted based on the type of fish received, as shown further below.

Completing the elite Ardougne Diary yields 50% more fish, and a full contribution meter also yields an additional 50% more fish.

When playing in large groups, expect 13-15 fish per trip with a full contribution meter (worth 12,810.65 coins at level 99 Fishing which is 118,252.18 coins/hour), and experience rates of around 9,000 xp/hour. When playing solo, expect 20-22 fish per trip (worth 19,215.98 coins at level 99 Fishing which is 164,708.39 coins/hour), and experience rates of around 13,000 xp/hour.

There is a 1/12 chance^[3] that players will receive a piece of the angler's outfit they do not already own. When equipped, pieces of the outfit grant a small experience bonus while Fishing. If the player's inventory is full and they attempt to pick up an outfit piece, the outfit piece will drop on the ground. The chance for a piece does not scale with the contribution meter beyond the initial threshold of 50 points. Players can receive two full sets, but the first set must be fully completed before obtaining pieces of the second set.

19 June 2024 (Update)	The Fishing Trawler now divides the rewards between players present when the ship sets off, not players present at the end of the encounter. Previously, the rewards accumulated by players who log out before the end of the trawler trip would be distributed among other players.^[4]
3 August 2022 (Update)	Camera effects found whilst playing the Fishing Trawler minigame can now be toggled in the Settings menu.
13 October 2021 (Update)	It's now easier to earn points from bailing when the Fishing Trawler is very crowded.
5 May 2021 (Update)	The information interface provided at the start of Fishing Trawler can now be toggled off or on by talking to Murphy on the boat in Port Khazard. You can also switch it straight off just by clicking "Do not show this again" on the interface itself.
28 April 2021 (Update)	World 315 (US) has now become a designated Fishing Trawler activity world. The trawler is now leakier when more players are on it. Stands to reason, right? However, more than one player can now fix a trawler railing at a time. Problem solved!
21 April 2021 (Update)	Game duration has been halved, thus changing from 10 to 5 minutes. In response to the changed game duration, the drop rate of Angler's Outfit pieces has been decreased from 1/8 to 1/12. The activity bar has been replaced with a contribution meter that does not deplete over time. You'll need a certain amount of contributions to start earning rewards. Two new activities related to the Kraken have been added.
10 September 2020 (Update)	An empty catch issue at the end of the minigame has been fixed.
15 August 2019 (Update)	Leaky holes in the Fishing Trawler now allow more people to attempt to patch them simultaneously without giving dead clicks. The minigame's timer has been corrected, as it previously claimed the trip lasted 12 minutes, even though it was actually 10 minutes long. The activity bar in Fishing Trawler will no longer decrease if there's nothing to do.
11 August 2016 (Update)	An activity bar has been added to ensure everyone aboard is taking part in the minigame. Ironmen can now access the minigame.
17 September 2015 (Update \| poll)	Fishing Trawler now drops the trawler outfit.
6 August 2015 (Update)	Ironmen can now unlock the Fishing Trawler music tracks in order to attain the Music Cape.
26 November 2015 (Update \| poll)	A button has been added to the HUD of the Fishing Trawler minigame, which allows the swaying camera movement to be disabled.
24 September 2015 (Update)	You can no longer perform skillcape emotes aboard the Fishing Trawler.
5 March 2015 (Update \| poll)	You now get 50% more fish from the Fishing Trawler minigame if you have completed the elite Ardougne Diary.
5 March 2013 (Update)	A bug has been fixed that was making the Fishing Trawler fail to fill with water properly when sinking.
22 February 2013 (Update)	An issue with players being stuck on Fishing Trawler minigame has been fixed.
Date unknown	After an unknown update, the Fishing Trawler was updated to stop people from using High Level Alchemy during the activity.

Trivia

Receiving a piece of the angler's outfit as a reward yields the message: "The luck of the sea is in today. You spot a piece of fishing gear caught up in the netting!"
Attempting to bring a cat on the trawler while it is following the player or in the inventory yields the message: "You cannot take a cat out on the trawler. What if it were to fall in the sea?"
Attempting to bring any other follower that is following the player or in the inventory yields the message: "You cannot take that follower on the trawler. It might get wet."
If the Easter ring or snowman ring is equipped before the trawler sets sail, the player is shown in egg form or as a snowman during the sailing animation, with the egg or snowman floating in the middle of a black screen.
Any attempt to use a skillcape emote on the boat before the trawler sets sail is blocked, yielding the message: "The boat movements put you off whilst trying to do your emote on the trawler. You feel a little sick."
When the Fishing Trawler had an activity meter, players that were inactive were kicked from the minigame and sent to the same location as if the boat had sunk.
The Fishing Trawler is actually two instances that swap between each other. You can spot a flash on screen when this switch happens, every minute or so. Dropped items will disappear and then reappear as instances are swapped. Dropped items will also appear when reboarding the ship, assuming they have not despawned.
It's possible for swamp paste to be used but have no effect when filling a hole at the same time as another player when the ship transitions between "empty" and "water-filled".
While pets are not allowed, currently the Chaos Elemental Jr. pet is able to be brought onto the boat.
It's strongly recommended not to die on the Fishing Trawler (usually through self inflicted damage). Because each water level of the trawler is a seperate non-instanced location, to recover the grave a player must board the trawler again and have the boat fill up to the same amount of water as when they previously died.
