The Rat Pits are a minigame that involves pet cats fighting against rats in several underground gambling rings. There are a total of four pits throughout Gielinor, located in Varrock, Ardougne, Keldagrim, and Port Sarim. Access to the Rat Pits requires partial completion of Ratcatchers, and the pits are unlocked one at a time throughout the quest. Ironmen cannot take part in this minigame.

Pits

Rat Goes Splat
The jingle that plays when winning a fight in the pits.
Rat Beats Cat
The jingle that plays when losing a fight in the pits.

There are 4 pits around Gielinor, each requiring a specific type of cat to take part. Players unlock each pit after helping the owner of the pit during the Ratcatchers quest.

Official world

The following official world is assigned to the Rat Pits:

How to play

Note: Rat Pits is one of the least popular minigames, and is generally considered dead content. Playing a game will likely require bringing along another player, as there is rarely anyone else in the Rat Pits.

What to bring

The Keldagrim pit.
  • A cat (see table above for the type you need for the pit you wish to visit)
  • A catspeak amulet if the player has not completed Dragon Slayer II (allows use of strategy in the fight — your cat will fight to the death without it)

Rules

The first pit in Ardougne will only allow kittens. Second, in Varrock one will only allow cats. Third, in Keldagrim will only allow overgrown cats. The last pit in Port Sarim will only allow wily cats. All pits prohibit lazy cats, and these cats will need to be trained into to a wily cat to be used; this can be accomplished by speaking to Felkrash in the Port Sarim Rat Pits while accompanied by a lazy cat.

The Rat Pits betting interface.

To begin, players place bets. The minimum bet allowed is 100 coins, and the maximum is 20,000 coins. Both players must place the same bet before the minigame will begin. If a player has a catspeak amulet, they can tell the cat which strategy to use:

Dialogue option Outcome
None (no catspeak amulet) The cat's stats are unchanged. In addition, the cat will fight until it dies, in which case the player would lose both the fight and the cat.
Just be careful in there cat. The cat's Defence and Hitpoints are greatly increased, but Attack and Strength are greatly reduced. In addition, the cat will leave the fight (and lose) when its health drops too low.
Stay in for as long as you can. The cat's Defence and Hitpoints are increased, but Attack and Strength are reduced. In addition, the cat will leave the fight (and lose) when its health drops too low.
No guts, no glory! The cat's Attack and Strength are increased, but Defence and Hitpoints are reduced. In addition, the cat will fight until it dies, in which case the player would lose both the fight and the cat.
Go berserk! The cat's Attack and Strength are greatly increased, but Defence and Hitpoints are greatly reduced. In addition, the cat will fight until it dies, in which case the player would lose both the fight and the cat.

Once players place bets and choose strategies, the cats will attack rats. The number of rats that need to be killed before a cat wins depends on the type of cat. If a cat runs away or dies, the owner of the cat will lose the bet. If both cats tire out at the same amount of kills, the minigame declares the match a draw and both cats and bets return to their owners.

Rewards

The game rewards coins for the winner of the bet. The Ardougne and Varrock pits advance a cat's growth by approximately fifteen minutes if the cat wins, and half that amount if it loses.

If the growth-time reward would put the cat into the next stage of growth, the cat's growth may sometimes not advance, and instead show a negative time remaining.
