Gielinor (Jagex: GILL-in-or) is the fictional world in which Old School RuneScape takes place. It was discovered and given its name by Guthix.[1] It is orbited by a single moon, which is the realm of Zanaris.

Two of its continents, the mainland and Zeah, are accessible to players. Five of its nine oceans, along with parts of a sixth ocean, are accessible through the Sailing skill.

Discovery

In the First Age, the god Guthix discovered the world of Gielinor. He would then travel to Tarddiad to invite Seren to this newly discovered world, one that Guthix had deemed perfect, and together they would terraform the planet and bring many races through the World Gate to Gielinor.[2][3][4][5]

Land

Gielinor's mainland comprises the Misthalin, Asgarnia, Kandarin and Morytania kingdoms, the Kharidian Desert, the Wilderness, the south-western ogre lands of the Feldip Hills, the hidden elven lands of Tirannwn, and the northern Fremennik Province and Troll Country.

South of the mainland kingdoms of Asgarnia and Kandarin lies the tropical island of Karamja, located on which are the towns of Brimhaven in the north and Shilo Village in the south, Musa Point to the north-east, and the Kharazi Jungle in the far south. Other notable islands include Ape Atoll, Fossil Island, Crandor, and Tutorial Island.

Far west of the mainland is the continent of Zeah, which comprises the Great Kourend and Varlamore kingdoms, and the Kebos Lowlands, which have a comparably long history.

Other regions such as the Wushanko Isles (also known as the Eastern Lands) and Acheron are known to exist, but are currently inaccessible.

Ocean

Gielinor has nine oceans: the Ardent, Unquiet, Shrouded, Western, Northern, Sunset, Forgotten, Untamed, and Eastern Oceans. Oceans are divided into seas. For example, the Ardent Ocean is divided into the Bay of Sarim, Mudskipper Sound, the Kharidian Sea, and more. Some seas are hazardous.

Currently, players are able to sail on the Ardent, Unquiet, Shrouded, Western and Northern Oceans, along with parts of the Sunset Ocean.

Trivia

  • "Gielinor" is an anagram of "religion".
  • The term "Gielinor" was first coined in Issue 16 - "Guthix Dispels Rumours" of the God Letters.[6]
  • Ancient menaphite philosophers were able to figure out that the planet is a sphere, using evidence provided by sailing ships to back up this claim.[7]
  • The world of Gielinor has its own calendar system consisting of 365 days split into 10 months, which suggests that the planet's movement closely matches that of Earth's movement in the real world.
  • According to Scale theory, Gielinor is much larger than depicted ingame. This can be seen in the official RuneScape novels, which describe it taking days or weeks to travel between locations which only take minutes to travel between ingame.
  • The Anima Mundi is the life-force of Gielinor, being connected to and fed by all life on the planet.
