Acheron is an inhospitably cold landmass somewhere north of the Fremennik Province and the islands of the Northern Ocean.[1]
Freja the Kyattess mentions that the early Fremennik tribes used to trade with the inhabitants of Acheron.[2] The Fremennik share stories of icy winds on Acheron that could freeze hearts to stone, it is described as a terribly vicious place where no living thing can survive.[3]
Mentions
- The adventurer Freja in the Myths' Guild explored the continent and brought back the transcript of Imcandoria's fall. She is planning an expedition to Acheron and mentions possibly taking the player with her when the time comes.[4]
- Brundt the Chieftain states that the Fremennik will lead an expedition to Acheron after the dagannoth threat is dealt with.[5]
- The crew of the Lady Zay, a pirate ship roaming the Northern Ocean, jokingly state Acheron is cold enough to freeze spoken words.[6]
Known settlements
- Imcandoria, the ancient capital of the Imcando dwarves, abandoned after unspeakable horrors claimed its people.
- The Isle of Garmr, home to a tribe of unspecified giants who were metalworkers, as well as several Auspah tribes.
- The Penguins likely hail from Acheron, referring to it as their "Motherland", a region on the continent that includes the city of Palingrad.
Trivia
- Before the release of The Tale of the Muspah in RuneScape 3, some players speculated the Mahjarrat ritual site was on Acheron,[7] although with the release of the Ritual of the Mahjarrat this was proven incorrect. The ritual shrine was added near Ghorrock in Old School RuneScape with the release of Making Friends with My Arm.
- In ancient Greek Mythology, Acheron was known as the river of pain, and was one of the five rivers of the Greek Underworld.
- Before the dialogue in Rune Mysteries was rewritten in 2022, Archmage Sedridor claimed that the rune essence mine is hidden in the frozen north, which may have been referring to Acheron.
- Freja has supposedly seen evidence that horses, a mythical creature, once roamed the wilds of Acheron.[8]
