The Wushanko Isles (also known as the Eastern Lands)[1] are an archipelago in the far east of Gielinor, across the Eastern Ocean from Morytania and the Kharidian Desert. They are currently inaccessible.
Known details
The Wushanko Isles are an archipelago made up of several groups of islands, primarily inhabited by sirens. Only one group of islands is currently known - the Pincers, which includes the island of Ashihama.[1]
The Nightmare originates from Ashihama, supposedly unleashed by a ritual that went wrong performed by shamans who were seeking great power. The Nightmare plagued the inhabitants of the island with nightmares for many years,[2] until Shura ventured into the mostly unexplored caves beneath the island and discovered totems that had been created to be used against the Nightmare. She, with the help of the totems and a group of warriors, was successful at driving the Nightmare off the island, and chased it all the way to the mainland in hopes of defeating it for good.[3]
Port Phasmatys was once a thriving port that frequently traded with traders from the Wushanko Isles. However, that changed after the inhabitants of the port were subjected to blood tithes once the vampyres took notice of the town.[4] Necrovarus, a priest from the Isles, arrived to the port with a promise of providing protection of the vampyres, and the Ectofuntus was constructed.[5] It had the side-effect of draining the life out of the port's inhabitants, turning them into ghosts.[6] Despite all that, the port still sees some trade; Ak-Haranu, a trader from the Isles, can be found at Port Phasmatys.
The Old crone, in her house between the Slayer Tower and Fenkenstrain's Castle, says: "I cannot read the strange letters of the Eastern Lands." when brought the Book of haricanto during the Ghosts Ahoy quest, implying that the Wushanko Isles have a different writing system than the mainland. Additionally, some characters known to be from the Wushanko Isles such as Ak-Haranu and Shanomi appear unskilled at speaking the common tongue of the mainland, further suggesting that a different language is spoken in at least some parts of the Isles.
The cyclopes in the Warriors' Guild are "from the far east lands", brought back to the guild by Harrallak Menarous who went on an expedition to the Isles.[7] Shanomi, a battle mage who created the magical animators and is in charge of the animated armour in the guild, also comes from the Wushanko Isles. Kamfreena may also come from the Isles, based on her Zen dialogue and her apprentice Lorelai's use of a katana.
Additionally, a lone cyclops can be found in the Ardougne Zoo. According to the Zoo keeper, this cyclops was brought to the zoo by an explorer from a "far away land", but little else is known because the explorer died shortly thereafter.[8]
The design of the bow-sword, created during the Devious Minds quest, originates from the "lands to the far east", according to the monk.[9] Similarly, the katana, obtained from elite Treasure Trails, was made in the Isles by the weaponsmith Hattori Hanzo. A type of explosive called fire oil is also used in the "far east", as Mel Achy wrote in the Big book of bangs. It is likely that repeating crossbows similar to that of the Karil's crossbow are also used in the Isles, as Ak-Haranu sells bolt racks, which are used in the empire's armies.[10] It is also possible that Karil's crossbow itself, as well as other pieces of Barrows equipment, may be directly from the Wushanko Isles, as Sliske collected them on his travels to many distant lands.[11]

Trivia
- The Wushanko Isles is based on medieval Asia cultures, particularly Japan.
- In the first Postbag from the Hedge, the Mysterious Old Man claimed the strange boxes that he used to give out originated from the Eastern Lands, as the locals there are known for being knowledgeable on trinkets and toys, as well as being pranksters.[12]
- During the 2014 April Fools event, players could use a boat to travel to the "Islets of Langerhans" in the Eastern Lands, and were greeted by one of several various NPCs.
- The islets were actually just some of the islands from the inside of the Water Altar.
- During the 2015 April Fools event, the player had to deliver packages for Little Mo. One of these packages contained "eastern crystals" for the man at Musa Point, possibly meaning that the crystals came from the Isles.
- In RuneScape 3, it is revealed the Isles are made up of 8 different groups of islands: The Arc, The Skull, The Hook, The Scythe, The Bowl, The Pincers, The Loop, and The Shield.
- Only The Arc is accessible as a playable area in RuneScape 3, but all of the islands can be interacted with through the Player-owned port minigame.
