Necrovarus is a ghostly priest and mage. He arrived in Port Phasmatys from the Eastern Lands after having a vision of an underground source of power - the pool of ectoplasm located beneath Port Phasmatys. He is the main antagonist in the Ghosts Ahoy quest.

Necrovarus came from the Eastern Lands, but little else is known about his early history.

Port Phasmatys was once a thriving port until Lord Drakan took notice of the settlement and demanded blood tithes from people living there. The inhabitants had no choice but to give in to his demands, and over time, the number of people living there dwindled and there was talk of abandoning the town, until Necrovarus arrived. He claimed there was a source of power underground that could help repel the vampyres, and he helped them build the Ectofuntus, which would create a magical barrier around the town that would repel Drakan and his vampyres. During the construction of the Ectofuntus, one of Necrovarus's disciples had turned against him before the project was finished, and fled.^[1]

Once the Ectofuntus was completed, it worked perfectly to repel the vampyres, but there was a side effect. All the people in the town died, became ghosts, and could not go on to the next world. This was the true intention of Necrovarus, who intended to use power of the ghosts and the Ectofuntus for his own evil purposes (Necrovarus himself seems to have died when the Ectofuntus was built, but this in effect conferred a form of immortality on him without stopping his worldly ambitions). At the end of Ghosts Ahoy, Necrovarus is thwarted and is forced to give up control over the town's ghostly inhabitants. They can now move on to the next world if they wish, although most have chosen to remain in this world at Port Phasmatys for the time being.

• The Staff of the dead is based on Necrovarus' staff.
• In the Ghosts Ahoy quest, when using an enchanted ghost speak amulet you can command Necrovarus to do an impression of a chicken without discharging the amulet. In his impression he says "Cluck cluck squuuaaaakkkk cluck cluck" then "I think I've laid an egg...".
• Also using this amulet you can convince him to tell you a joke without discharging the amulet. The joke he replies is "Knock Knock, Who's there, Egbert, Egbert who?, Egbert no bacon".
• Necrovarus' name comes from the Greek prefix necro, meaning death, and indeed may be a play on necrovirus.
