Vampyres are a bat-like humanoid race, originating from Vampyrium. They were brought to Gielinor by the Stranger from Afar, who taught them the concepts of civilised culture. Prior to the Stranger's arrival, vampyres were organised into small hunter-tribes, which transformed into today's Vampyre Houses. [1] Their main competitors were the Yarasa, who were also fierce bat-like humanoids and often warred with the vampyres. All the Yarasa, with the exception of Xarpus, the Yarasa King, were driven to extinction when the vampyre tribes united together. [2]

The vampyre race is comprised of both true-born vampyres, who were born on Vampyrium, and humans that have been converted through a process known as vampyrification. The process of vampyrification seems to cause the host to lose parts of their former personality. Human-born vampyres make up a significant portion of vampyres in the Sanguinesti region.[3] The only known cure for vampyrification is through the use of the Guthix Balance potion.

Vampyres are capable of disguising themselves as humans, and have the ability to turn into a mist form, which some make use of to escape from combat. They also possess immunities to most types of weaponry, with all but the weakest vampyres being immune to any weapon not made of silver.[4] Additionally, more powerful vampyres have fast reflexes and a limited mind reading effect, allowing them to predict and dodge attacks, which makes unpredictable weapons like flails more effective against them.[5] Other weapons effective against vampyres include the Rod of Ivandis, a specially designed weapon wielded by Ivandis Seergaze capable of holding weaker vampyres in place, and the blisterwood tree, the wood of which shifts and grows unpredictable even when removed from the tree,[6] and the sap of which could be used to make poisons that are deadly to vampyres.[7]

Prior to the God Wars, vampyres were brought to live in the Zarosian Empire.[8] Some vampyres held important roles in the empire, such as Vardorvis who was Carnifex Maximus (chief executioner). Following the collapse of the Zarosian Empire, the vampyric race played a major role in helping Zamorak wage the God Wars.

The vampyres followed their ruler, Lowerniel Drakan during his invasion of the Hallowland, which they renamed Morytania. They have been the dominant race of Morytania since the end of the God Wars. They are, however, effectively trapped in the region due to the River Salve, a river between Misthalin and Morytania blessed by the Seven Priestly Warriors on behalf of Saradomin. As a result, there are only a handful of vampyres known to live outside of Morytania, with most being generally weaker than their Morytanian brethren.

Morytania is ruled by House Drakan, who have set up an elaborate rotating tithe system all across Morytania in order to prevent stocks from exhausting too quickly. The majority of blood comes from Meiyerditch, a ghetto divided into six sections and patrolled regularly to stamp out any signs of dissent. The other locations are Canifis, home of the werewolves, and Slepe, a Zamorakian village. Due to the growing vampyre population and dwindling supply of humans (as many are mistreated), the stocks of blood in recent years have been approaching dangerously critical levels.[9]

During the events of The Blood Moon Rises, Sugadinti Vitur becomes the new leader of the vampyres after Lowerniel wished to have everyone sent back to their homeworld to return to their original, primordial ways, which many opposed. Sugadinti decreed that all humans were to be freed and that consumption of their blood, if unwillingly, was strictly outlawed. Most of the vampyres went along with his rule without much issue, and the blood crisis was mostly resolved with the supplies on Vampyrium and the tithing of his aranei followers.

Location

Vampyres are found all across Morytania, but the majority live in the haunted woods and around the Sanguinesti region, east of Burgh de Rott, which includes Meiyerditch and the vampyre capital, Darkmeyer. Feral vampyres, which lack the intelligence, society, and culture of other vampyres, live in the Haunted Woods east of Canifis and near the Mort Ridge Mine south of the Mort Myre Swamp.

Vampyre juveniles and vampyre juvinates can be found roaming in the woods east of Burgh de Rott, and inside Meiyerditch just outside Ver Sinhaza. Vyrewatch can be found inside Meiyerditch, Darkmeyer, and around the Crombwick Manor in Slepe. In Slepe, they are accompanied by some vampyre juvinates.

Some vampyres can be found outside of Morytania, however, they are usually extremely weakened, making them almost entirely harmless.

Types of vampyres

There are five main classes of vampyres in Morytania:

Feral Vampyres

Feral Vampyres are Vampyre juveniles and juvinates who have reverted to a feral, animalistic state. While physically stronger than their non-feral counterparts, they are mindless and completely lose any immunity they may have had before. They are only found in the Haunted Woods and God Wars Dungeon, cast out of vampyre society.

With the use of a Guthix balance, juveniles and juvinates can be turned into feral vampyres.

If the player is wearing a holy symbol whilst being attacked by a Feral Vampyre, occasionally the vampyre will be debuffed, reducing their Attack, Strength, Defence, and Magic by 25%. This is indicated by the chatbox message The vampyre is weakened by your holy symbol of Saradomin. However, this debuff quickly expires.

Vampyre Juveniles

They are the weakest of the vampyres and are thought to be newly converted from humans. Unlike Vampyre Juvinates, they can be damaged by any weapon. They will turn into vapour and retreat unless they are fed a Guthix balance potion or frozen by the rod of ivandis or ivandis flail special attack.

Vampyre Juvinates

A Burgh de Rott Vampyre Juvinate.

Vampyre Juvinates are more developed vampyres that are stronger than vampyre juveniles. As they've started to develop some powers, juvinates are completely immune to non-silver weaponry. As with juveniles, they will turn into mist and retreat unless a player freezes them with the rod of ivandis or ivandis flail special attack or uses a Guthix balance potion on them.

Juvinates are usually used as servants by the nobility and often employed with menial work, such as ambushing travellers, collecting tithes from outlying villages, and guarding mines such as the Meiyerditch mine and Daeyalt essence mine, much to their annoyance.

Vyres

Vyres are fully fledged vampyres, true-born or fully transformed humans. Vyres have the ability to fly, and can only be harmed with the Ivandis flail, or its upgraded version, the blisterwood flail. They can also perfectly disguise themselves as humans whenever they wish.

The Vyrewatch are vyres that form the vanguard of the Sanguinesti region, and are the only vyres able to be fought outside of quests. They are an elite brigade of vampyres that are armed with spears. Along with juvinates, they are employed with and in charge of the tithing system. Sanguinesti Vyrewatch monitor their tithing schedule on a strict rotating regiment by only tithing one of the six different sectors each week. They also have the ability to teleport players to the Daeyalt mines.

In addition to managing the tithe system, the Vyrewatch were also mentioned to be a brutal patrol force in Morytania during the In Aid of the Myreque quest. As Vanstrom thinks the Myreque perished at the end of In Search of the Myreque, Veliaf Hurtz wishes to move the Myreque base to Burgh de Rott before the Vyrewatch find out they had survived.

Efaritay's aid does not allow regular weaponry to damage Vyrewatch, but it can still be used to increase the accuracy of the Ivandis flail, blisterwood sickle, and blisterwood flail against them.

Additional vyres such as Vyreladies and Vyrelords can be found in Ver Sinhaza, but cannot be fought.

Vyrewatch Sentinels

Vyrewatch Sentinels are stronger variants of the Vyrewatch, and can be fought after completing the Sins of the Father quest. They can be found prowling the streets of the upper class areas of Darkmeyer, in search of unruly humans to snack on. The Vyrewatch Sentinels are one of the only monsters that drop the blood shard (the other being venators), although they can also be obtained via pickpocketing the various Vyre citizens throughout the city. As with all members of the Vyrewatch, they can only be harmed with the Ivandis flail or the blisterwood flail.

Tiers

The vampyres above can be categorized in three different tiers. Aside from the tiers determining their status among the vampyre caste system, it also determines whether or not they are vulnerable to regular weapons, silver weapons, or only to special silver weapons.

Tier Vulnerabilities
Tier 1 vampyres All weapons deal full damage
Examples: Feral vampyres, vampire juveniles
Tier 2 vampyres Regular weapons deal half their normal damage
Silver weapons deal full damage
Examples: Vampyre juvinates
Tier 3 vampyres Regular weapons deal no damage
Only specific silver weapons deal full damage
Examples: Vyrewatch, vyrewatch sentinels, venators, ancient feral vyres

Language

Vampyres have their own language, although little is currently known about it as no examples of it can be seen ingame. According to Flaygian Screwte, it is very old and not often used anymore.[10] The haemalchemy volume 1 and haemalchemy volume 2 are both mostly written in the vampyric language.

Trivia

  • Following RuneScape 3, "vampire" is no longer used. It was thought that Jagex intended for them to be two separate races. Prior to the release of A Taste of Hope on 24 May 2018, Feral Vampyres were simply called "Vampire" and vampyre dust was "vampire dust". The word "vampire" within the name and dialogue of Vampyre Slayer was changed to "vampyre" on 4 June 2020.
  • Count Check is not actually a vampyre, but rather a man dressed up as and pretending to be a vampyre.
  • Vampyres do not like garlic. Against very weak vampyres, such as Count Draynor, it is capable of weakening them, and garlic is also a required ingredient in the Guthix balance potion which is capable of curing Vampyre Juveniles and Juvinates.
    • Against stronger/true-born vyres, garlic does not weaken them, but rather enrages them, as seen when carrying around garlic cocktail in Darkmeyer.
