Venators are Slayer monsters that require 74 Slayer and completion of the quest The Blood Moon Rises to fight. Compared to vyrewatch sentinels, they are a higher-intensity encounter with a better drop rate for blood shards, along with a relatively decent supply of dragon arrowtips and dragon dart tips via their fang and teeth drops. Like vyrewatch sentinels, they are considered tier 3 vampyres and can only be killed with specific vampyrebane weapons. If the Bigger and Badder Slayer reward is unlocked, there is a chance for a blood-starved venator to spawn upon killing a venator, even when off-task.
Players may only attack venators on-task if they have been assigned vampyres from their corresponding slayer master, or a venator task if assigned from Mortimer. Players may also kill venators off-task by paying the nearby aranei with Stymphike feathers; each off-task kill requires 30 feathers, costing a total of 6,720 coins.
Venators will attack with melee if next to the player, or ranged otherwise. Praying correctly will negate all ranged damage and most melee damage. Whenever a venator damages a player with melee, it will heal the same amount. Occasionally, a venator will charge up a shriek attack. If the player has a protection prayer active during the shriek, they will see the message "The venator's screech disrupts your concentration!", taking damage and losing some prayer points. This will hit once every tick for the duration of the screech. When wearing earmuffs or a Slayer helmet, the damage from the shriek is significantly reduced and it hits for one fewer tick.
If killed with a Sunspear special attack, they will additionally add a venator heart directly to the player's inventory, if they have free space. The heart can be sacrificed on an Aranei shrine to restore 50% special attack energy and up to 24 prayer points, useful to extend trip length. Another potential way to extend trips is to utilise either the Saradomin godsword or Ancient godsword special attack. Despite these two weapons not being vampyrebane weapons, their special attacks still work as if you had hit. A garlic cocktail in one's inventory will not make them aggressive.
Venators were bred by the vampyres to be used for blood sport and hunting.[1] They are believed to be the closest living relative to vampyres.[2]
