Mortimer is the highest level Slayer Master, found in Wyrmscraig Cavern. To be assigned a Slayer task by Mortimer, the player must either have a combat level of 100 and a Slayer level of 70, or any combat level if the player has achieved 99 Slayer and shows him the Slayer cape. In addition, the player must have partially completed the Fallen From Grace quest.

Mortimer has three unique traits that separate him from other Slayer Masters. The first is that, rather than granting Slayer points by default, Mortimer has a unique system of unlockable modifiers called "Mortifiers" that affect his tasks. The second is that he only assigns tasks with a superior variant, making him ideal for players seeking drops from the superior slayer table such as the imbued heart and eternal gem. The third is that he offers a choice of tasks when getting an assignment from him. Because of this, skipping a task from Mortimer is significantly more expensive, costing 100 slayer points rather than the usual 30, and he only offers two block slots instead of six (seven with elite Lumbridge & Draynor Diary), which cost 120 slayer points each. Additionally, Mortimer's tasks cannot be skipped by receiving a replacement assignment from Turael.

As with Krystilia, tasks stored from Mortimer are shared alongside the rest of the Slayer Masters. The player should take note of this if they have a temporarily undesirable task from Mortimer and another undesirable task from another Slayer Master, as they will be forced to complete one of the two in order to free up storage.

Mortimer is the only Slayer Master who can assign venators directly, and shares several tasks that used to be exclusive to only a single other Slayer Master, namely hydras from Konar, Infernal mages from Vannaka and Rockslugs from Mazchna. While Mortimer is intended for superior slayer monsters, players can complete the task at their corresponding boss if applicable.

Transportation

  • The Lunar spell Astral Contact can be used to receive a new assignment from Mortimer remotely.

Tasks

The interface when selecting an assignment from Mortimer, showcasing different options and modifiers.

Unlike other Slayer Masters, Mortimer offers a choice of two potential tasks when approached for an assignment. This increases to three options after the player has completed 50 Slayer tasks with him. Each task can only be offered once per prompt. For example, a player cannot be given a choice of tasks in which two or more options are crawling hands. However, players can get the same monster back-to-back, even without the slayer cape effect going off.

Similarly to Krystilia, Mortimer's task streaks are counted separately from that of normal tasks. If Mortimer has offered you a task, you cannot get a task from another Slayer Master. If you attempt to do so, you will receive the message, "Hmm... It appears as though Mortimer has provided you with a task choice, you must go to them in order to pick."

Alongside the option to pick a task, each of Mortimer's tasks have a modifier to potentially incentivise one task over another. A modifier can be applied to one or more offered tasks at a time. For example, two tasks might offer more Slayer experience while the third offers a quantity modifier.

  • Modifier 1 (0 tasks) - Task awards X Slayer Points on completion.
    • When completing a task with this modifier as Partner Slayer, both players obtain the same amount of points, since his original points value is 0. If the contribution ratio is notably different the higher contributor may get an additional slayer point.
  • Modifier 2 (0 tasks) - Task quantity modified by X.
  • Modifier 3 (15 tasks) - Clue scroll drop rates are increased by X%.
  • Modifier 4 (25 tasks) - Superior slayer creatures access the superior unique drop table X% more often.
  • Modifier 5 (40 tasks) - Slayer creatures award X% more Slayer experience.
  • Modifier 6 (50 tasks) - Adds a third task choice.

The Slayer cape, if it activates on one of Mortimer's tasks, will retain the assigned task and modifier. This can be used to retain a preferred task and modifier combo, e.g hydras with a 150% drop rate increase for superior slayer drops.

If the player is unsure of what modifier the task has, they may check their enchanted gem, slayer ring (or eternal slayer ring) for the overall benefit. If looking for the exact modifier for clue scrolls, slayer experience or superior drop rate increase, they must head to a Slayer Master.

Below is the list of tasks Mortimer can assign along with the proposed minimum and maximum values that can roll for that creature's modifiers. The modifier values increase in increments of five, for example: 25%, 30%, 35% and so on.

Strategy

Unlike other Slayer Masters, where it does not matter if you pre-configure your block slots, or block a task after getting it, for Mortimer's two-task choice it does make a significant difference.

For regular players and Ironmen players who are in an official group, it is highly recommended to do tasks as partners; not only are tasks significantly sped up but sufficient participation ensures both players contribute towards the 50 task total for 3 tasks at a time. Assuming the player(s) can access the entire task list, blocking venators are highly recommended, as they are incredibly slow, assigned in high numbers and require too much attention. For the second block, players can consider from turoths, drakes or hydras depending on their personal preference. Due to the high costs for cancelling and blocking, players should try to clear as many tasks as possible, since slayer points aren't given unless they were offered as part of the task.

During the first 15 tasks, Mortimer can only offer either slayer points or a number modifier. These tasks should be treated as any normal task would. Prioritise the easiest tasks that offer negative numbers (e.g pyrefiends with -15 to task) first; if these are not offered, try to pick a low number or fast task (such as non-extended aquanites). Most of the higher-leveled tasks are usually cannonable and/or in a multicombat area, so the tasks can be done quickly. Expeditious bracelets are highly recommended for finishing up tasks, and a slayer cape is beneficial for the possibility of repeating an easy task.

After the first 15 tasks, Mortimer will begin offering a new modifier in the form of clue scrolls, which reduces the chances of possibility getting a bad modifier. An additional modifier is added at 25 and 40 respectively, meaning that it is less likely to get a bad task with a bad modifier. All relevant strategies for Mortimer's tasks can be found on the task section, and should be used as a baseline for ideal completion of these tasks.

When hunting for superior unique drops, players should prioritise high-level tasks (at least 75+ or higher) while the task has the superior unique chance modifier. If this is not available from the offered tasks but the monster is still assigned, they can still be taken if the other options are not ideal. All tasks above at 75 and higher will begin to offer substantially reasonable rates, though AoE tasks such as abyssal demons have a lower rate to make up for their higher kill speed. As stated before, a slayer cape is helpful to repeat these tasks, which is particularly powerful for the most ideal of tasks such as hydras with a 150% drop modifier.

A good superior block list usually involves blocking both venators and either drakes or hydras. Drakes are usually given in lower quantities and are tougher to kill, while hydras are easier to kill but usually slower, impeding the effective spawn rate of superior creatures. The remaining tasks can either be done or skipped, though with three task offerings, using points to cancel becomes highly unlikely since there is usually a good chance for one of the three offered tasks to be worth doing. Additionally, claiming the Elite tier rewards from Combat Achievements is highly recommended for superior hunting as this increases the spawn rate from 1/200 to 1/150. If these tasks are done in the Wilderness, the spawn rate is increased by a further 10% to 1/180 and 1/135 respectively, though players who are doing as such should not bring items they are unwilling to lose.

Development history

As with many aspects of Wyrmscraig, Mortimer was designed by the player ScreteMonge as part of the Player Designed Island Competition. Mortimer would have allowed players to choose their next Slayer task from another Slayer Master for a "hefty cost" of Slayer reward points, which was intended to bring traditional Slayer task-streaking in line with Turael skipping. The ability to buy desired Slayer tasks was scrapped by Jagex due to it being too difficult to balance, along with feeling that it would only reinforce Turael skipping instead of offering an alternative.[2]

Jagex's initial proposal required the following amount of Mortimer task completions to unlock each modifier. They were roughly halved due to player feedback that the amount of time required to reach 100 Mortimer tasks would outweigh his benefits.

  • 0 tasks - Slayer Point Modifier
  • 0 tasks - Task Quantity Modifier
  • 25 tasks - Clue Scroll Modifier
  • 50 tasks - Slayer XP Modifier
  • 75 tasks - Superior Drop Rate Modifier
  • 100 tasks - Third Task Choice

Trivia

  • "Mortimer" is an English name derived from the Old French morte, meaning dead, and mer, meaning sea. Mortimer's designer did not intend for the name to be a pun, though they did realise it could be interpreted as one shortly after conceiving the character.[3]
  • Mortimer's cloak has the symbol of Saradomin on it, implying that he is a Saradominist.
    • He also proclaims himself to be the oldest Slayer Master in Gielinor.[4] He is at least a few centuries old, as he says that's how long ago he coined the term "mortifiers" for his modifiers.[5]
    • It is possible that Mortimer could be thousands of years old, as Saradominists led by Elessia first settled on Wyrmscraig during the Third Age.

"In Gnome's original design, Mortimer would have allowed players to directly choose any Slayer task in exchange for a large number of Slayer Points. While we understand the appeal of this idea, particularly for those of you who want to see an alternative to established methods like Turael skipping, we felt that implementing this exact design would be difficult to balance appropriately. Additionally, we feel the original design may also have negatively impacted the core identity of Slayer as a RNG-based task system and would have resulted in Turael boosting being even more meta than it is currently."

I just thought it was a very fitting name. I did realize it shortly after, of course. So there must be some subconscious memory of association between a character Mortimer and it being a dead guy that I have and simply can't consciously recall."
