The dark mage, located at the centre of the Abyss, is a Zamorakian who holds the abyssal rift open so that the Z.M.I. (and players who have completed the Enter the Abyss miniquest) can continue to access abyssal space and the runic altars.

He repairs damaged essence pouches for free and provides a replacement abyssal book and/or small pouch if lost. It is not necessary to bring the pouches to him, as he can repair them even while they are in the player's bank. Alternatively, players can use the Lunar spell Astral Contact to speak to him; this is a faster and safer method.

He will refuse to give the player a small pouch if they already have a colossal pouch, citing that using too many at the same time may cause "dimensional turmoil".

In his dialogue, he tells the player that it is crucial for his concentration to not be broken while maintaining the rift; otherwise, the heads of anyone in the Abyss could explode, or the universe could fold in upon itself and reality be annihilated.

He has been able to stay in the Abyss for so long because, according to the Mage of Zamorak, time there passes slower than normal.

Dark mage is the solution to the hard anagram clue: DEKAGRAM. The answer to his question is 13. He must be spoken to in-person; Astral Contact will not progress the clue.
