Hans is the servant of Duke Horacio[1] and can be found walking in circles around the Lumbridge Castle courtyard. He is easily scared, screaming and running away in fright when threatened.[2] He can tell players how old their accounts are or how long they've spent online by talking to him.
Hans can also be spoken to by selecting "random contact" on the Astral Contact spell. If Hans is contacted, your character will claim you are a knight coming to kill everyone in Lumbridge Castle. Hans panics in response.

- Hans is the solution to the beginner cryptic clue: Always walking around the castle grounds and somehow knows everyone's age.
- Hans is the solution to the easy cryptic clue: Speak to Hans to solve the clue.
- Hans is the solution to the hard cryptic clue: Snah? I feel all confused, like one of those cakes...
Holiday events
- He played a minor role in the 2016 Birthday event, where he witnessed a seagull take a gnome child's hat.
- In the 2018 Christmas event, where he was one of the recipients of a gift from Duke Horacio. He is given a chair from the Duke's room, which he takes in relief, having spent many years circling the castle without relief.[3][4]
- In the 20th Anniversary event, he gives his navigational chart to the gnome child to help the latter return to the Realm of Memories.
- In the 2022 Birthday event, a variant of Hans was one of the participants in the cook off hosted by My Arm.

Trivia
- Jagex claims that Hans was the first non-player character created in RuneScape.[5] However, this is likely untrue. Bob appears earlier in RuneScape Classic's data files, and is visible in pre-release screenshots, while Hans is not. It is possible that Hans was the first NPC added by Paul Gower, while Bob was added by Andrew Gower. Unicorn appears first overall, but is non-human and cannot really be considered a "character".
- When retreating after getting scared by the player, he can be lured out of the castle walls as far as the entrance of the H.A.M. Hideout.
- Hans may be a pun about time, as his name resembles "hands" (as in the hands of a clock), he tells you how much time you've spent in RuneScape, and his walking pattern around Lumbridge castle goes clockwise and takes him exactly 1 minute to complete a lap, like the second hand of a clock.
- Hans had a festive override wearing a santa hat during the 2023, 2024, and 2025 Christmas events.
