Bob is the owner of Bob's Brilliant Axes in southern Lumbridge. Players can pay Bob to repair damaged Barrows equipment and Moon equipment. However, many players prefer to repair their Barrows armour at an armour stand in a player-owned house because it is usually cheaper depending on the player's Smithing level.

Bob also plays a small role in The Lost Tribe, where he may be one of several townsfolk who mentions seeing a goblin with bulging eyes go through a hole in the Lumbridge Castle basement. He also plays a role in Death to the Dorgeshuun, where he expresses strong disgust towards the Dorgeshuun, screaming at the player and Zanik "Get out of my shop! GET OUT!" [...] We don't serve the likes of that thing in here.

As a result of the removal of the Ent random event and the automatic repair of all existing broken axes, Bob no longer was able to fix woodcutting axes for the player.

Trivia

  • Bob was the first non-player character added to RuneScape Classic. He can be seen in pre-release screenshots with a different skin tone, as his addition predated the option to change the skin of characters.
  • "Bob is a crazy racist!" according to a RuneScript code comment accompanying Bob's hysterical outburst towards Zanik during the Death to the Dorgeshuun quest.[1]. This comment was written by Mod John A, the main developer of that quest. After Death to the Dorgeshuun was released in 2006, "crazy racist" became one of Bob's defining character traits going forward.
  • Prior to the removal of the Ent random event in 2014, Bob would repair a player's Broken axe if they failed to notice the Ent in time.
  • The painting inside Bob's Brilliant Axe's may be a reference to Bob Ross's "Distant Mountains" painting, as the framing and subject are nearly identical.
  • As a child, Bob was sent to the Varrock Museum by his father, hoping he'd follow the path of academia. The museum instead assigned him to preserve and repair Third Age Armour, a skill he picked up rather quickly. In the May 2022 edition of the Postbag from the Hedge, he credits this experience as the reason he is able to repair ancient and exotic armours such as those dropped by the Barrows Brothers.
  • During the 2017 Birthday event, Bob was one of several NPCs to challenge the player with a riddle. His riddle was about the cost of repairing an axe, in reference to his historical role repairing axes for players who failed to notice the Ent random event in time.
  • During the 2018 Christmas event, Bob gave the player an Amulet of duplication.
  • During the 2019 Halloween event, Bob told the player about a fight that occurred between two goblin trick-or-treaters outside his shop if asked.
  • During the 20th Anniversary event, Bob expressed displeasure at having the Gnome Child in his store. Initially, he said "We don't normally serve its kind in this shop."[a], before being flattered after the Gnome Child mistook him for Robert the Strong and deciding "Your gnome friend is weird, but he's welcome."
  • During the 2021 Birthday event, Bob was one of the Lumbridge citizens to be attacked by a monkey.
  • During the 2023 Birthday event, Bob fixed the Cracked cake tin.

Notes

  1. ^ This phrase references the practice of denying service to individuals on the basis of race during the Jim Crow era. The specific phrasing "serve your kind" may have originated in the film Star Wars (1977), in which the statement "We don't serve your kind here" is made towards C-3PO by the bartender of the Mos Eisley cantina.[2] This phrasing has since entered general lexicon as a common reference to racist retailers.
