Zanik is a cave goblin who is called up to explore the surface during the Death to the Dorgeshuun quest. Being the first of her kind to view the surface above, she's a curious and eager sort. Her preferred weapon is the Dorgeshuun crossbow.

Before starting Land of the Goblins, she can be found in various places across Dorgesh-Kaan: her house, the council building with Ur-tag, Oldak's lab, the building with the goblin scribe, two places in the Dorgesh-Kaan Agility Course, and next to the entrance to the Dorgesh-Kaan–Keldagrim train system. About every five minutes, she uses a teleport sphere and teleports to another location. You cannot talk to her while she is teleporting, and it's possible for her to teleport to the same place she already was at.

Zanik is intended to be visible in various places across Dorgesh-Kaan after Death to the Dorgeshuun, but currently she only becomes visible in the city after completion of Another Slice of H.A.M.. Additionally, players can still hear her using teleport spheres to teleport across the city when standing next to her while she's invisible.

Quests

Death to the Dorgeshuun

The player first meets Zanik in Death to the Dorgeshuun, when they are asked by the Dorgeshuun Council to escort Zanik to the surface world and investigate the activities of the Humans Against Monsters group. After giving Zanik a tour of Lumbridge she tells the player about a strange mark that the player notices on her forehead. Zanik says that she gained the mark (the symbol of Bandos) on her forehead after visiting Juna and participating in Tears of Guthix. Juna told Zanik that she has been marked for a special purpose and that Zanik should speak to her when the mark reappears again in the future to find out more about her destiny.

The player and Zanik disguise themselves with H.A.M. robes and enter the H.A.M. Hideout. The pair are able to infiltrate deep into the hideout by making use of Zanik's ability to kill guards in one hit with her bone crossbow's special attack. However, they are caught while listening at the door and the player is knocked out. Upon regaining consciousness the player finds that Zanik has been tortured and killed. The player finds Zanik's body and sees that the mark on her forehead has begun to glow. The player takes Zanik's body to Juna who restores Zanik to life using the Tears of Guthix, stating that her death is premature and that she has not yet fulfilled her destiny. Upon Zanik's restoration to life, Juna says that Zanik is destined to lead all goblins into a new age. After this Zanik and the player foil Sigmund's plan to flood Dorgesh-Kaan by defeating him and smashing the drilling machine, though Sigmund escapes. Zanik reports to Ur-tag that the surface world is safe and advises that the city should be opened to humans.

Another Slice of H.A.M.

Zanik and Tegdak investigate archaeological artefacts, remnants of the Dorgeshuun Civil War, that have been found during the excavations made to build the Dorgesh-Kaan–Keldagrim train system. Zanik and the player travel to Goblin Village to try and decipher symbols on the ancient mace they found amongst the artefacts. When they speak to Grubfoot, he tells them that he has had a dream about Zanik's arrival. He believes her to be the Chosen Commander who will lead goblins to victory over the whole world. Generals Wartface and Bentnose introduce her to the goblins of Goblin Village as the Chosen Commander and ask her to make a speech to them. She begins to speak to them, but this is cut short by a H.A.M. attack. Sigmund manages to capture Zanik and ties her to the new train system's tracks, planning to have her killed by a train to start a war between the dwarves and cave goblins. The player manages to rescue Zanik before this can happen.

Land of the Goblins

Grubfoot comes to Dorgesh-Kaan seeking Zanik. He has had another dream about her, in which he saw her leading all goblins to their former home land of Yu'biusk. Zanik and the player travel to the secret Goblin Temple to try and find a way to get to Yu'biusk. Zanik is imprisoned for failing the high priest's test on goblin religion. The player frees Zanik and, with the help of Oldak, they are able to open a portal to Yu'biusk.

When exploring Yu'biusk, a strange box is discovered, which upon opening sucks Zanik into itself and seals itself shut. Her whereabouts are currently unknown.

Trivia

  • The word Zanik has various meanings in different languages.
    • In Dutch her name means nag (with the infinitive being zaniken).
    • In Polish it means atrophy and/or disappearance.
    • In Czech it means death, destruction and/or extinction. Arguably more fitting translations than the former, although it is not clear if this was intended by Mod John A.[1]
  • Mod John A stated in a Q&A on 23 July 2010 what the inspiration behind Zanik was:
    • "One was the character Starbuck from Battlestar Galactica (the new version, where Starbuck is a girl)."
    • "Another is the song 'Us' by Regina Spektor--that's always how I've imagined Zanik's voice to sound, even though obviously you never hear it in-game."
    • "There are lots and lots of other things that inspired the character, though, and a lot of the creative process is subconscious so I don't even know myself."
  • If you talk to the cook while you are taking Zanik on tour of Lumbridge he will say it's Duke's birthday, like on the start of Cook's assistant quest.
  • Zanik has her own theme song, and while it was previously unlisted in Old School RuneScape, it was added to the music player on 9 February 2022 with the release of Land of the Goblins.
  • Both quests that she stars in lists her Combat level as 41.
  • Zanik might have been first mentioned, although not by name, in the fourth Postbag from the Hedge, where Ur-tag says "There are only a few cave goblins who have ever interested her [Juna], and only one who is living now, but she has expressed interest in visiting the surface so perhaps someday you will meet her."[2]
