King Roald

King Roald Remanis III^[1] is the current ruler of the prosperous kingdom of Misthalin. His residence is within Varrock Palace, where the Varrock Palace Secret Guard work to keep him safe. He is located in the south-east side of the Palace on the ground floor. He is notable for being one of the least controversial kings, as he is a very straightforward, stable ruler. He has a wife, Ellamaria, who rules alongside as queen.

Roald III is the son of Roald II, a monarch most famous for his efforts to reclaim the Shield of Arrav from the Phoenix Gang and Black Arm Gang. Although little is currently known of Roald III's early history, he is known to have had a pampered upbringing, learning to read from the Palace's librarian, Reldo.

Since his rise to the position of king, Roald III has been accepted by most as a generally good ruler. Under his rule, the city of Varrock has prospered greatly, and has seen the renovation of the Varrock Museum and the establishing of the Grand Exchange.

Yet, despite this, there are certain groups that feel Roald is weak in the face of the Church of Saradomin, and others that would go so far as to see him assassinated. His hesitance in matters such as the recent conflicts with Morytania have earned him many enemies.

During the Shield of Arrav quest, players must visit King Roald to collect a reward for returning the Shield of Arrav to the Varrock Museum. Originally, King Roald had no role in the quest, but an update gave him a small part in the quest's ending, paying the reward to the player for returning the shield.

In the Priest in Peril quest, players are tasked by King Roald to check Drezel, a priest who is the caretaker of the Paterdomus temple. When they arrived, 'Drezel' asked them to kill Temple Guardian guard 'dog' in the temple's basement. Unaware that the temple had been taken over by a group of Zamorakians and Drezel was actually jailed, the adventurer slew the dog and returned to Roald, who was enraged by the news. He threatened to execute them, but showed mercy and allowed them to fix their error, which they were able to do so by freeing Drezel and reblessing the source of the River Salve.

King Roald plays a minor role in Children of the Sun as he seen receiving a delegation consisting of Prince Itzla Arkan and Servius, Teokan of Ralos from the kingdom of Varlamore.

During the What Lies Below quest, he falls under a mind control spell cast by Surok Magis and is forced to fight against the player. He is level 47 and can only be defeated if the player summons Zaff when he is at zero Hitpoints. He is immune to damage from the Vengeance spell, recoil rings, and poison.

During Darkness of Hallowvale, upon learning that civilians are being kidnapped by werewolves crossing the Salve but not wishing to break the Edicts, Roald activates the Mercenary Protocol, allowing mercenaries to travel to Morytania and combat its evils.

At the end of Garden of Tranquillity, players are asked to bring him to the garden by Queen Ellamaria, who has prepared it for him as a surprise. After giving him a tour, King Roald is not pleased with the garden and Queen Ellamaria scolds him for not showing gratitude, marking the completion of the quest.

Roald plays a minor role in Defender of Varrock quest. During Zemouregal's attack on Varrock, the adventurer brought the shield of Arrav to Roald. They told him that they believed he was a descendant of one of the Elders of Varrock, which Roald was confident he was, only to use the shield and nothing interesting happened from it.

In the culmination of Dragon Slayer II, players seek his aid at the behest of Jardric and Bob. He sends a large number of soldiers to help in the battle against the Dragonkin Zorgoth.

King Roald is the solution to the medium anagram clue: LARK IN DOG. The answer to his challenge is 24.
