A clue scroll (medium) is a valuable random drop from a large variety of mid-levelled monsters. Clue scrolls are the start of a Treasure Trail - a treasure hunt that sends players hunting all around Gielinor. At the end of the hunt players receive a reward of items randomly selected from a specific list, possibly including very rare and very valuable items. For a guide on how to complete a clue scroll, see: Treasure Trails Guide. Medium clue scrolls are mostly easy to obtain and complete, and offer average rewards in return. The rewards can range from mithril armour to ranger boots.

Medium clue scrolls can be between 3 and 5 steps long.

Medium clue scrolls offer coordinate clues along with more complex puzzles than easy clues, and occasionally a monster ranging from a chicken to a Market Guard may be fought. However, there are no clue steps that bring you to the Wilderness.

Completion of medium clues will give a casket (medium) containing the final reward for the trail. After completing 400 medium clues, the player will be awarded a clueless scroll.

Completion of Medium Combat Achievements gives a 5% increased chance to receive a medium clue scroll from all sources, excluding implings.

A medium clue scroll can be given to Watson along with an easy, hard and elite clue scrolls in order to receive a master clue scroll.

For players wishing to quickly obtain Medium clue scrolls, one of the best non-combat methods is thieving Aldarin Villa chests. While the clue drop rate from this chest is 1/90, the chest can be opened about 400 times per hour, yielding an average obtaining rate of one medium clue every 14 minutes or so, as well as ~80,000 Thieving experience per hour.

Mechanics

Dying with a scroll

As clue scrolls are untradeable, they are sent to the gravestone if unprotected on PvP or PvM death, even above level 20 Wilderness. Clue boxes are not necessary and only add additional risk when in the Wilderness.

Multiple clues

As with all tiers of clue scrolls, only one medium clue scroll can be held, kept in Death's Office, or stored in a bank at one time; attempting to open a scroll box (medium) while holding a medium clue scroll gives the message The clue box refuses to open - you already have a clue. However, it is possible to drop clues on the floor, where they'll stay for one hour, allowing players to have multiple clues at once. Dropping prior clue scrolls while having done some of their steps does NOT retain the steps of the dropped clue when starting a new one.

Casting an alchemy spell

When casting an alchemy spell on a clue scroll, if the game setting that triggers a warning on untradeable items is disabled, a different confirmation warning is triggered, asking "wouldn't you rather solve the clue?". If the game setting is enabled, only the regular question is triggered.

Types of clues

Please note that it is possible to receive the same clue more than once.
