A clue nest (hard) is randomly obtained from Woodcutting or bird house trapping on Fossil Island if the player has not completed X Marks the Spot, otherwise they will receive a Scroll box (hard) and an empty bird nest will drop to the ground. Searching the nest gives a hard clue scroll and an empty bird nest.

If the player completes X Marks the Spot before opening the clue nest, they will instead receive a hard scroll box.

All clue nests are dropped in addition to logs.

The ring of wealth (i) doubles the rate of clue nest drops above beginner from Woodcutting in the Wilderness.

The chance of obtaining a hard clue nest while chopping down a tree depends on a number of factors, including the player's Woodcutting level, the base chance of receiving a clue nest from that type of tree, and a clue tier modifier. In addition, the drop rate of hard clue nests is given a 5% boost upon unlocking the hard tier of Combat Achievements rewards.
