The monkey is a talkative animal obtained during the Monkey Madness I quest. Unlike other animals in-game, it stays in your inventory rather than following you around.

Using any form of teleportation will cause the monkey to vanish. The monkey cannot be banked.

If you drop the monkey, it wanders around for about 30 seconds before disappearing, during which time it can be picked up again by talking to it. However, if the monkey is dropped on Karamja, it becomes a monster like other Karamjan monkeys and exclaims "Yay! I'm free!," granting the player Thieving experience equal to twice their level before disappearing.

While in your inventory, the monkey can be poked, much to its annoyance, and it will often interrupt the player with forced dialogue. It can be fed bananas, monkey nuts, monkey bars, and banana stew, although it will claim to not want the latter items, despite eating them anyway. The monkey will also occasionally eat bananas in your inventory without notice.

Monkey Madness I

During the Monkey Madness I quest, the player is tasked with saving a monkey from the Ardougne Zoo in order to earn the trust of the monkey king Awowogei. The monkey can only be obtained by wielding a Karamjan monkey greegree and talking to the Monkey Minder, who will put you in the cage with the other monkeys. Once in the cage, talk to a monkey with an m'speak amulet equipped and convince the monkey to get into your backpack.

To get out of the cage, unequip the greegree and speak with the Monkey Minder, who will remove you from the cage.

Guaranteed clue

You can obtain a one-off medium clue scroll from the monkey by manually feeding it bananas. The chance of receiving the clue scroll is 1/256,[1] and when it occurs, a message will appear in the chatbox saying The monkey chews on the banana and spits out a clue..

In order to trigger the chance of receiving the clue scroll, you must click "Click here to continue" on the dialogue that appears each time you feed the monkey.

Once you've obtained a clue scroll from the monkey, feeding it will result in a message saying The monkey is grateful, but it won't give you any more clues..

(Update)

If player has already received a clue scroll from the monkey, the player will receive a message indicating this when feeding the monkey again.

Trivia

  • When interrupting the player, it will say "Are we there yet?", "I'm tired." or occasionally have nightmares about the Shaikahan (although the monkey misspells it as "Shaihakan").
  • Another line dialogue "In the jungle, the mighty jungle..." is a reference to the song The Lion Sleeps Tonight by The Tokens.
  • Attempting to bank the monkey results in the message Sorry, you can't bank the monkey!.
  • At one point an exploit existed that allowed a player to collect an entire inventory of this item. Which, upon death, would result in a horde of monkey NPCs exploding from your corpse.[2]

Mod Ash: "Long ago, there was a trend of bringing an inventory load of monkeys from Ardougne Zoo (which wasn't meant to be possible), so that they'd all spawn as NPCs when you died - i.e. you collapse and a horde of monkeys explode from your corpse."
