Karamja Volcano

Crandor is a small volcanic island north of Karamja. Players are unable to sail to Crandor themselves, but can buy the last remaining ship that can handle Crandor's reefs from Klarense. Players seek out this boat during Dragon Slayer I, when the Guildmaster tasks them with defeating the mighty dragon Elvarg.

History

The following lore is sourced from Dragon Slayer I, Melzar's notes, dialogue with Klarense, dialogue with Duke Horacio, dialogue with the Guildmaster, and [[:Postbag suffers from feature creep.]].

Crandor was once a thriving community, considered to be as politically important as Falador or Varrock. Crandorians were known for their ships, among other popular traded wares. Its size was much greater than the cove that remains today, as much of the city teetered on wharfs and piers that stretched out into the ocean. The island itself was the centre of trade, with people from Asgarnia, Misthalin, the Fremennik Province, Kandarin, and Karamja all showing up to buy and sell. However, Crandorian traders eventually stopped coming to the mainland, due to an adventurer disturbing the dragon Elvarg, who lived under the volcano.

The dragon, engineered to be extremely aggressive by a dragonkin, proceeded to destroy Crandor and wipe out all but three survivors: a trio of wizards named Thalzar, Lozar and Melzar, who split up the only surviving map back to Crandor as they couldn't bring themselves to destroy it. After reaching the mainland, the three survivors parted ways. Lozar built a home in Lumbridge, and Thalzar built a vault in the Dwarven Mine. Melzar settled near Rimmington, where Crandorian survivors first fled, only for them to be tracked down by Elvarg and killed. Melzar sought to use necromancy to revive the survivors but was slowly driven to madness in the process; he never succeeded in reviving them, but he did reanimate the bones of many of the victims, and the ghosts in his home have vague memories of the dragon attack.

The mainland was terrified that Elvarg would follow the wizards there and lay waste to all of Asgarnia and Misthalin, but thankfully, Elvarg returned to her cave under the volcano. Some time later, a brave adventurer found the pieces of the map, learned the path to Crandor, and ventured down into the volcano to vanquish the fearsome dragon. However, Elvarg did manage to score one final casualty, slaying the cabin boy on the adventurer's ship. The cabin boy, Jenkins, later returned to the island as a ghost, and began offering his services to players looking for help while Sailing.

Transportation

Location of the false wall.

Crandor is first be accessed by boat during the Dragon Slayer I quest. Players must obtain all three map pieces and repair the boat; after this, Ned will bring them to the island. After the quest, Crandor can only be accessed via a secret door in the Crandor and Karamja Dungeon.

To reach the Crandor surface, players must first enter the Karamja Volcano, either by exiting the TzHaar City, or by climbing down from Karamja. The wall can be found in the north-east corner of the area. After passing the wall, players can run north, to the rope they placed during Dragon Slayer I, and climb up the rope to reach the surface.

The fearsome dragon Elvarg.

Locations

Crandor has multiple ores which players can mine through the Mining skill, labelled on the map with a small pickaxe. There are four mining areas on the island, each guarded by their own monster. Due to the level of the monsters and their drops, it's a common island for mid-to-high level free-to-play players to train on, especially when ranging from the many safespots. All of the monsters attack with melee. Players can encounter these monsters again in the dungeon below, as well as deadly red spiders and Elvarg.

Location Ores available Level for non-aggression
South-west beach 7 mithril rocks 45
North-east beach 3 gold rocks 65
South foothill 3 coal rocks, 3 adamantite rocks 85
North foothill 7 coal rocks, 1 mithril rock 57

Dungeon

Underneath the island is a dungeon which connects to Karamja, labelled on the map with a red exclamation mark. Players can climb down the hole at the top of the island to enter. In it are more skeletons, lesser demons, and Elvarg, as well as some giant bats and deadly red spiders on the Karamjan side.

Elvarg resides in her own section of the dungeon. To the north of her cave is a laboratory, accessed during Dragon Slayer II.

Inhabitants

The inhabitant is Cabin Boy Jenkins, who returns to the island as a ghost after Dragon Slayer I is complete. Beyond him, the island has many monsters:

Trivia

  • After completing Dragon Slayer I quest, Ned can be found on the broken ship on Crandor, but will not talk about the task for the Lumbridge & Draynor Diary.
  • Crandor is the only island to be fully accessed on free-to-play.
    • A few tiles on the western side of the island are not accessible on free-to-play worlds, as they formerly played the members' only track Fruits de Mer. Although Fruits de Mer was removed from Crandor in April 2021, the tiles still remain members-only.
  • Prior to an update on 18 June 2007, Crandor was covered in lush foliage.
  • On the south-western part of the island, next to the mithril rocks, there are three so-called 'force-walk'-tiles that will force the player to another tile when stepped on.
