Mystery boxes can be obtained from the Quiz Master random event. Players can choose between 1,000 coins or the mystery box upon successfully completing the event. Multiple mystery boxes can be owned at once, and they can be banked. Five are received as a one-off reward from drinking a bottle of puzzlers poteen.
It is recommended to wear a ring of wealth before opening the box, because of the significant chance to roll on the rare drop table. Doing this (along with completing all currently owned clue scrolls) will make it possible to completely eliminate the chance to receive nothing. If opened on Entrana, the mithril scimitar drop is replaced by five mithril bars, while the steel platebody drop is replaced by five steel bars. This does not, however, occur while challenging Koschei the deathless, and the box can be used to gain an extra advantage from its weapon and armour drops.
Because of the difference in the size of the drop tables between free-to-play and pay-to-play worlds, players looking for experience lamps are better off opening their mystery boxes on free-to-play servers. Notably, the stale baguette is still obtainable on free-to-play worlds.
Free-to-play rewards
The following drop rates are provided by Jagex, unless otherwise specified.
The average mystery box opened on a free-to-play world is worth 3,102.84. However, because there are fewer drops on the free-to-play rewards table, the chance of receiving an experience lamp on free-to-play worlds is more than doubled, compared to the rates on pay-to-play worlds.
Excluding the stale baguette, the average reward is worth 454.17.
