The lamp is a reward obtained from several random events or by opening an Intricate Pouch that differs from those awarded by quests. While these lamps cannot be traded or banked, rubbing one gives the option of adding experience to any skill a player chooses. The amount given is ten times their skill level of choice (e.g. a skill at level 21 would give 210 experience).

Lamps always go to your gravestone on death unless protected.

Using lamps

The interface when using the lamp.

After an icon is selected, clicking 'Confirm' at the bottom grants the player experience in the chosen skill.

It should be noted, members must be on a members' world to select member skills. The Construction option cannot be selected unless the player owns a house. Runecraft, Herblore, and Sailing cannot be selected until the completion of Rune Mysteries, Druidic Ritual, and Pandemonium respectively.

Most players use lamps on skills too time consuming or expensive to train, like Agility, or Construction. Combat skills are seen as a poor use of the lamp, unless one is a combat pure, as lamps allow pures to gain combat experience without training Hitpoints. Skillers sometimes use lamps to train Slayer without raising their combat. A player may hold onto the lamp until they gain a level, especially if they are close to one. This is because it will give slightly more experience (10 more per increase) at a higher level. However, retaining the lamp will take up inventory space, as it cannot be banked, and this can be counterproductive when training some skills. Although it can take some time, it is possible to gain multiple Genie events lamps.

Another common reason for a player keeping a lamp would be for the ease of reaching celebrated levels like a 99. This makes the level-up significantly easier and allows the player to have a much wider choice of level-up locations. An example might be a player achieving level 99 in any skill in their player-owned house by using the lamp to obtain the final experience required to level.

Lamp XP displays how much XP you get per lamp.

Lamps to lvl displays how many lamps you need to go from 0 XP into the previous level to that level.

Total lamps displays the total amount of lamps you would need to go from 0 XP all the way to that level (note: since this is the total amount of lamps needed, it will be off from the "Lamps to lvl" value due to residual XP. Residual XP is anywhere between 0 and 796 per level).

Trivia

  • It would take exactly 15,057 genie lamps to level a skill from level 1 to 99 and another 188,855 to reach 200 mil exp for a total of 203,912 from 0 to 200 mil exp.
  • It takes the same number of lamps to get from level 1 to 2, as it does to get from level 39 to 40.
  • Level 10 experience of 100 gives the highest percentage (49%) of the difference to the next level. The levels 5 to 18 give 40% or more, levels 4 to 23 give 30% or more, levels 2 to 30 give 20% or more and levels 1 to 40 give 10% or more.
  • When trying to bank a lamp it will say "A magical force prevents you from banking this item", and the lamp will stay in your inventory.
  • The lamp can be stored in death storages such as Death's Office, Zulrah, Vorkath and more.
