The Combat Options interface.

The Combat Options tab allows players to choose how to use their equipped weapon. Players can choose from a list of combat styles, each with different attack types and weapon styles that a player can use in Combat, which in turn affects their level boost and what experience they receive. Available combat options are determined by the weapon category, which is listed just beneath the auto-retaliate option and special attack bar. After the start of the Pandemonium quest a toggle will be added in the top left to swap to the Sailing Options interface.

Melee weapons

Melee weapons vary in their combat options. Some present 3 options, one each for accurate, aggressive, and defensive styles; while others might have four options, the extra one typically being either a controlled option or an alternative aggressive attack. See Weapons/Categories for a full list of options by weapon category.

Selecting type will change the player's accuracy. Bonuses can be seen in the Equipment Stats interface. The player's accuracy rolls are determined by their selected attack type. This applies to special attacks too. The player's accuracy roll rolls against their opponent's matching type defence. There are exceptions; most special attacks are rolled always against a predefined type. The general rule is that you can determine the attack's type from its special attack animation. Slashing specials roll against slash defence, and crushing animations against crush defence (dragon dagger / crystal halberd special attacks' selected type accuracy roll will roll against an opponent's slash defence).[1]

There currently isn't a player wieldable melee weapon that calculates accuracy from magic or ranged bonus, but there is ranged weapon, the dwarf multicannon, which calculates accuracy using the player's Ranged or melee bonus depending on the weapon and attack style, detailed in the accuracy section of its page.

Accurate

When using the accurate style, for every point of damage a player deals, they gain 4 experience in Attack and 1.33 experience in Hitpoints. Using the accurate style provides an invisible +3 boost to your Attack level.[2]

Aggressive

When using the aggressive style, for every point of damage a player deals, they gain 4 experience in Strength and 1.33 experience in Hitpoints. Using the aggressive style provides an invisible +3 boost to your Strength level.[2]

Defensive

When using the defensive style, for every point of damage a player deals, they gain 4 experience in Defence and 1.33 experience in Hitpoints. Using the defensive style provides an invisible +3 boost to your Defence level.[2]

Controlled

When using the controlled style, for every point of damage a player deals, they gain 1.33 experience each in Attack, Strength, Hitpoints, and Defence. Using the controlled style provides an invisible +1 boost to your Attack, Strength and Defence levels.[2] This attack style is only available for certain melee weapons: longswords, scimitars, maces, spears, halberds, hastae, claws, and whips.

Ranged weapons

Accurate

When using the accurate style, for every point of damage a player deals, they gain 4 experience in Ranged and 1.33 experience in Hitpoints. The accurate style allows a player to shoot less often than in the rapid style, however they receive a +3 invisible bonus to their Ranged level, thereby increasing accuracy and damage.[3]

Rapid

When using the rapid style, for every point of damage a player deals, they gain 4 experience in Ranged and 1.33 experience in Hitpoints. The rapid style allows a player to shoot more often than in the accurate style, but a player is more likely to miss (i.e. dealing 0 damage).

Longrange

When using the longrange style, for every point of damage a player deals, they gain 2 experience in Ranged, 2 experience in Defence, and 1.33 in Hitpoints. Attack range is increased by +2 tiles up to a maximum of 10 tiles.

Using the longrange style provides an invisible +3 boost to your Defence level.[4]

Magic weapons

While wielding a Magic weapon (commonly a staff), a player can use the normal melee attack styles in Melee combat, or use the Autocast option to automatically attack with a spell. Selecting this option will bring up a list of spells that can be autocast, which varies with each magical weapon. If the player selects a spell, the selected spell is repeatedly cast during combat as long as the player has the required Magic level and has the required runes. While a player has the autocast option chosen, they must also choose either the normal or defensive style to represent how they are casting their Magic.

Powered staff

  • The accurate style allows a player to receive a +3 invisible bonus to their Magic level.[4]
  • The longrange style allows a player to receive a +1 invisible bonus to their Magic level and a +3 invisible bonus to their Defence level. Attack range is increased with this attack style.[4]

Autocast

Unlike other combat styles and powered staves, autocasting does not give invisible bonuses.

Standard

If a player chooses the standard style for autocasting, they perform a normal magical attack and for each point of damage the spell deals, they gain 2 experience in Magic and 1.33 experience in Hitpoints, in addition to the Magic experience from casting the spell.

Defensive

If a player chooses the defensive style for autocasting, they perform a normal magical attack and for each point of damage the spell deals, they gain 1.33 experience in Magic, 1 experience in Defence, and 1.33 experience in Hitpoints. The experience from casting the spell is still given entirely to Magic.

Toggling Auto Retaliate no longer disrupts movement.

(Update)

The tooltip on the combat interface for spiked weapons, such as the Anchor, will now correctly state that the Aggressive stance gives Strength XP. A typo had led to it claiming that the weapon gave Controlled XP.

(Update)

When you switch between different styles of weapon, there's been a long-standing issue where the Special Attack button ignored clicks for a moment afterwards. We've rewritten the combat side-panel interfaces to fix this.

(Update)

The combat interface once again highlights the autocast buttons in red when you've enabled autocasting of a spell.
