Autocast is an attack option available for all Magic weapons (except powered staves and salamanders) that can be activated on the Combat Options interface. This attack option causes players to automatically cast a selected spell when they attack, as opposed to manually selecting the spell and its target each time you wish to cast it. Once autocast has been selected, a player will continue casting spells as their default attack as long as they wield the staff and have the correct amount of runes.

Wherever autocasting is available, there are two options: one with a picture of a shield on the button, and one without it. Selecting the option without the shield will cast magic offensively, granting only Magic experience. Selecting the "shield" option will cast magic defensively, dividing the experience gained between the Defence and Magic skills.

The autocast setting is remembered, unless

  • you equip a staff that cannot autocast the chosen spell, or
  • you equip a staff within 12 seconds after attacking a player in a PVP area

The spells that can be autocast vary between magic weapons. No teleportation, alchemy, curses, or enchantment spells can be autocast.

Standard spellbook

Regular staves, battlestaves, wands, and croziers can autocast elemental combat spells (Wind, Water, Earth, and Fire spells) from the standard spellbook. Certain staves can additionally autocast other spells:

  1. ^ From the standard spellbook, can only autocast Crumble Undead. Autocast is cleared on weapon swap.
  2. ^ 2.0 2.1 2.2 From the standard spellbook, can only autocast Wave spells and Surge spells.
  3. ^ When casting Magic Dart on task, increases the max hit by a minimum of 7, dependent on level.
  4. ^ When casting offensive spells from the standard spellbook, attack speed is increased to 4. While not a direct increase in Magic damage, this should result in an additional increase of damage per second (DPS), as most non-powered spells have an autocast speed of 5.

Ancient Magicks

The following staves can autocast the Ancient Magicks, as well as spells from the standard spellbook:

  1. ^ With Ahrim the Blighted's equipment and the amulet of the damned.
  2. ^ Is a dragonbane weapon and has a separate 75% accuracy and 40% damage bonus against dragons

Arceuus spellbook

The following staves can autocast spells from the Arceuus Spellbook, as well as spells from the standard spellbook:
