The ancient sceptre is an upgraded version of the Ancient staff that requires level 70 Magic, 60 Strength, 50 Attack, as well as completion of Secrets of the North to wield. It is made by bringing the untradeable Ancient icon and staff to Eblis. This combination process is irreversible.

The ancient sceptre, like its predecessor, can be used to autocast spells from the Ancient Magicks and standard spellbook. Unlike the ancient staff, the ancient sceptre provides a 10% Magic damage bonus, as well as a passive effect that increases the effects of Ancient Magicks by 10%. This passive effect does not increase the Magic damage bonus.

As a Zarosian item, it will also grant god protection towards Zarosian NPCs in the God Wars Dungeon.

If the player dies a PvP death and the item is unprotected, it is reverted to an ancient staff that is dropped for the killer, and the ancient icon disappears. To prevent this, a Trouver parchment and a payment of 500,000 coins can be given to Perdu in order to permanently lock the item. The locked item will remain in the player's inventory; however, the item will be in a mangled, unusable state and must be repaired by using it on Perdu and paying him 500,000 coins.

Passive effect

The ancient sceptre has a passive effect which increases the effects of all Ancient Magicks by 10%:

Spell Buffed effect
Poison severity is increased to 11, up from 10.

(Poison caused by these spells starts with 1 hit of 3 damage, instead of starting at 2 damage.)

Poison severity is increased to 22, up from 20.

(Poison caused by these spells starts with 2 hits of 5 damage, instead of starting at 4 damage.)

Opponent's Attack level is reduced by 11% instead of 10%.
Opponent's Attack level is reduced by 16.5% instead of 15%.
Successful hits heal the caster by 27.5% of the damage dealt instead of 25%.[a]
Ice Rush receives no buff from using the sceptre.[b]
Opponent is frozen for 17 ticks (10.2 seconds) instead of 16 ticks (9.6 seconds).
Opponent is frozen for 26 ticks (15.6 seconds) instead of 24 ticks (14.4 seconds).
Opponent is frozen for 35 ticks (21 seconds) instead of 32 ticks (19.2 seconds).
  1. ^ This stacks multiplicatively with bloodbark armour; when worn alongside the ancient sceptre, successful hits heal the caster by 38.5% of the damage dealt.
  2. ^ A 10% increase to Ice Rush's freeze duration is 8.8 ticks. As most calculations almost always round down due to the game's engine, this effectively results in no buffs for Ice Rush.

Quartz upgrades

The ancient sceptre can be enhanced with quartzes dropped by various bosses from Desert Treasure II.[1] This process can be reversed.

The enhanced sceptres require 75 Magic, 60 Strength, and 50 Attack to wield.

Sceptre Quartz Dropped by Effect
Blood ancient sceptre Blood quartz Vardorvis Blood magic can now overheal you by 10% of your Hitpoints.
Ice ancient sceptre Ice quartz Duke Sucellus Ice magic gains 10% accuracy on unfrozen, freezable targets.
Shadow ancient sceptre Shadow quartz The Whisperer Shadow spells also drain Strength and Defence in addition to the target's Attack level.
Smoke ancient sceptre Smoke quartz The Leviathan Smoke spells reduce healing received by 20% for 10 ticks on hit if the target is poisoned.

Trivia

  • When pitched in the poll blog, the item's name was "Soulblight sceptre". This was because the name of the quest and its rewards were polled by the development team as a "Mysterious Quest", where they wished to keep the Zarosian nature of the rewards a secret.
    • The true name of the quest and its rewards from the boss were then revealed in the Winter Summit 2022 a month later.
  • It is currently one of six items with a negative prayer bonus (required for a master clue step), with the other items being its four upgraded versions and the ancient staff used to create it.
