A player uses a smouldering stone to create an infernal tool.

The infernal axe is a special type of axe that is created by using a smouldering stone on a dragon axe, requiring 61 Woodcutting[not boostable] and 85 Firemaking[not boostable] to create. Creating the axe grants 350 Firemaking and 200 Woodcutting experience.

While chopping a tree with the infernal axe in the inventory or equipped, there is a 1/3 chance that the logs will be consumed as they are chopped, giving half of the Firemaking experience that would usually be gained by burning them the normal way. For example, redwood logs that are burnt by the infernal axe (which does not require level 90 Firemaking) will grant 175 Firemaking experience rather than the 350 experience that is granted by burning it normally. Experience gained from logs burnt by the infernal axe is increased by the Pyromancer outfit bonus.

The infernal axe does not consume bruma roots within the Wintertodt, sulliuscep mushrooms, or celastrus bark, instead acting as a regular dragon axe when cutting these trees. When chopping infected roots, it will only consume charges when a log is burned, and will not burn demonic tears.

The infernal axe cannot be reverted back to a tradeable dragon axe or smouldering stone. If lost on death in level 20 or higher Wilderness, it is converted to 11,976 coins.

Special attack

A player performs the infernal axe's special attack, Lumber Up.

The infernal axe has a special attack, Lumber Up, that it shares with the dragon, 3rd age, and crystal axes and their variants. It temporarily boosts the player's Woodcutting level by 3, consuming 100% of the player's special attack energy. The boost degrades every 60 seconds, with the player's Woodcutting level returning to normal after 3 minutes. Using Preserve can increase the duration by 50%.

Note that any levels boosted above 99 with the special attack will be treated as 99. Therefore, you will start to receive diminishing returns with the special attack at level 97 and 98,[1] with visible boosts past level 99 only notably influencing the clue nest chances.[2]

Degradation

The infernal axe is able to burn 5,000 logs before degrading. When fully degraded, the infernal axe behaves the same as a dragon axe, including its special attack. The axe's remaining charges can be checked via its right-click menu, and will be displayed as a percentage in the chat window.

Using a smouldering stone or dragon axe on a degraded infernal axe will consume the item, restoring 5,000 charges and granting 350 Firemaking and 200 Woodcutting experience.

  1. ^ The cost may be higher because of the variant of the item used. The base item is Dragon axe.

The Infernal axe is also an item Falo requires players to show him when he sings: "A fiery axe of great inferno, when you use it, you'll wonder where the logs go."

The uncharged version of the axe can be used.

Trivia

  • The infernal axe in Old School RuneScape acts in a manner similar to that of the inferno adze in RuneScape 3.
  • The infernal axe cannot be used to burn a redwood log for the Sherlock clue step. It doesn't complete the challenge.
