The dragon axe is the second strongest and fastest axe in the game after its direct upgrade, the crystal axe, and is tied with the 3rd age axe. It is 10% more efficient at chopping logs than the rune axe.^[1]

Like all axes, it is both a weapon (requiring 60 Attack to wield) and a tool (requiring 61 Woodcutting to use).

As with most dragon equipment, the dragon axe cannot be made from raw materials using the Smithing skill.

Special attack

The dragon axe has a special attack, Lumber Up, that it shares with the infernal, 3rd age, and crystal axes and their variants. It temporarily boosts the player's Woodcutting level by 3, consuming 100% of the player's special attack energy. The boost degrades every 60 seconds, with the player's Woodcutting level returning to normal after 3 minutes. Using Preserve can increase the duration by 50%.

The special attack can be used to allow players to chop with the axe itself starting at level 58 Woodcutting, although it cannot be used without the level 60 Attack required to wield the axe.

Note that any levels boosted above 99 with the special attack will be treated as 99. Therefore, you will start to receive diminishing returns with the special attack at level 97 and 98^[2], with visible boosts past level 99 only influencing clue nest chances.^[3] Like the dragon harpoon, the dragon axe's special attack does not disrupt resource gathering if the player is already chopping when the special attack is activated.

Upgrading

A player uses a smouldering stone to create an infernal axe.

Players can combine a smouldering stone with a dragon axe to create an infernal axe, which requires level 85 Firemaking (cannot be boosted) to do so. This process cannot be undone, and the resulting axe cannot be traded. The infernal axe will grant the player a 1/3 chance to burn logs for Firemaking experience whilst cutting. The infernal axe will be able to burn 5,000 logs before degrading, requiring another smouldering stone or dragon axe to charge it.

Players can also create a crystal axe via a singing bowl by combining a dragon axe with 120 crystal shards and a crystal tool seed. This requires level 76 Smithing and Crafting, which can be boosted. If players cannot create it on their own, they can have Conwenna or Reese sing the crystal for them for an extra 60 crystal shards, for a total of 180.
