The dragon pickaxe is the second strongest and second fastest pickaxe in-game, tied with the 3rd age pickaxe and behind the crystal pickaxe. It requires 61 Mining to mine with the pickaxe and 60 Attack to wield it. However, as its special attack temporarily boosts the player's Mining level by 3, players with at least 60 Attack can start mining with the pickaxe at 58 Mining.

Excluding waiting for ores to respawn or having to move to a new resource, the dragon pickaxe is effectively a 5.88% increase in overall mining speed compared to a rune pickaxe. By default, the dragon pickaxe provides a chance to mine an ore every three ticks, and there is an additional 1/6 chance to reduce this to two ticks,^[1] leading to an average of 2.83 ticks per roll.

The dragon pickaxe's special attack, Rock Knocker, temporarily boosts the player's Mining level by 3 (players will need to have 60 Attack to utilise this special). This consumes 100% of the player's special attack energy. The boost degrades every 60 seconds, with your Mining level returning to normal after 3 minutes.

This effect is useful to increase the chance of successful rolls or to meet a Mining level requirement above the player's base level. When used alongside the Lightbearer ring, special attack energy regenerates twice as fast, making it viable to consistently mine rocks 1-2 levels higher than base.

Note that any levels boosted above 99 with the special attack will be treated as 99. Therefore, you will start to receive diminishing returns with the special attack at level 97 and 98, with there being no value in using the special at level 99.^[2]

Players can combine a smouldering stone with a dragon pickaxe to create an infernal pickaxe, requiring 85 Smithing (boosts not allowed) to do so. This process cannot be undone. The infernal pickaxe will grant the player a 1/3 chance to disintegrate ores for Smithing experience whilst mining. The infernal pickaxe will be able to disintegrate 5,000 ores before degrading, requiring another smouldering stone or dragon pickaxe to charge it. The effect cannot be toggled.

Players can also create a crystal pickaxe via a singing bowl by combining a dragon pickaxe, 120 crystal shards and a crystal tool seed. This requires level 76 Smithing and Crafting, which can be boosted. If players cannot create it on their own, they can have Conwenna or Reese sing the crystal for them for an extra 60 crystal shards, for a total of 180.

Lastly, players can use a dragon pickaxe upgrade kit, Trailblazer tool ornament kit, or Zalcano shard to cosmetically enhance their dragon pickaxes, creating a dragon pickaxe (upgraded), Dragon pickaxe (or) (Trailblazer), or dragon pickaxe (or), respectively. This only alters its appearance and makes the pickaxe untradeable. The process can be reverted, but the dragon pickaxe upgrade kit will not be retained while the Trailblazer kit and shard will be.

• When the special attack is used, the player will exclaim Smashing!. This pun has a double meaning, as it's a somewhat old-fashioned British expression meaning 'very good' or 'wonderful', while also referring to breaking rocks.
• Prior to an update on 11 September 2014 making random events optional, the dragon pickaxe was the only pickaxe whose pickaxe head did not fly off its handle.
