Golem Crafting is a Crafting training method located on the island of Wyrmscraig that serves as an alternative to glassblowing at higher levels. Within the activity, players help the people of Auchrie use sunstone by crafting, powering, and clothing protective golems.

The method offers two intensity levels, with the higher-intensity approach utilising the momentum mechanic. Golem crafting requires completion of Fallen From Grace, and thus level 60 Crafting. All furs are immediately available to use at level 60. With access to the best furs, players can gain over 165,000 experience per hour. With a good pickaxe, mining enhancers, and speeding up shaping actions, it is possible to get up to 185,000 experience per hour.

Using the lower intensity approach, one should expect 100,000 Crafting experience per hour, and 28,000 Hunter experience per hour assuming that the furs are sourced by hunting goats found on the island.

Overview

Golem crafting has the following steps:

  1. Mine an inventory of sunstone.
    • Mining individual sunstone rocks allows players to take advantage of the momentum mechanic, increasing mining success chance and giving a chance for a second sunstone when moving to a new rock within 5 ticks.
    • Mining the sunstone monolith provides an AFK option for slower mining and lower experience gained.
  2. Initiate the golem by clicking an empty plinth with 4 sunstones and a hammer in your inventory, turning them into a golem base.
  3. Shape the golem by carving it from each side (north, east, west, and south), turning an unfinished golem into an unpowered golem once all 4 sides are finished. This will take 15 ticks per side, so 60 total plus movement time. If you click on the tick the experience drop is given while shaping, the next shaping action is sped up from 4 to 3 ticks. Spam clicking will also work.
  4. Finalise the golem by inserting a golem core (created by using a chisel on a sunstone) together with a piece of fur in the unpowered golem, awarding Crafting experience and an uncut gemstone. The higher quality of fur, the more Crafting experience you'll receive. Lower-tier furs (including ones found on the island) will work, but rarer furs from across the wider game will give better experience rates. Furs can be used directly from within a fur pouch.
A player with expert mining gloves taking advantage of the momentum mechanic to get an immediate roll for sunstone without depleting the rock.

  1. ^ 65-70+ golems are possible with high efficiency

Each successfully crafted golem rewards a gem with an average price of 462.

Note: Furs that cannot be stored in a fur pouch do not work. Tatty furs do not work. Furs obtained from combat (fur, bear fur, grey wolf fur, jaguar fur) do not work.

Strategy

Players with access to the Grand Exchange should purchase furs based on the experience rates and costs shown in the table above. Ironman accounts will have to collect furs themselves; dark kebbit fur is recommended due to the higher catch rate and faster collection rate of dark kebbits.

To reduce banking trips, players can combine mining sunstones with golem crafting. The following equipment is recommended:

  • Rune pickaxe if actively mining to take advantage of momentum, otherwise the best available pickaxe
  • Imcando hammer (off-hand) (off-hand mode so it can be equipped next to pickaxe)
  • Expert mining gloves (allows for easier sunstone collection)
  • Varrock armour (Tier 2, 3, and 4 confirmed work)
  • (Optional) Prospector outfit for some slightly increased Mining experience

In your inventory only carry the following:

  • Large fur pouch completely filled with your best available hunter furs (at least 25 furs)
  • Empty gem bag to collect gems rewarded for completing golems, as well as gems collected while mining
  • A chisel
  • 25 open inventory slots

A rotation of golem crafting, resulting in 5 completed golems looks as follows:

  1. Mine a full inventory of sunstone (25 exactly)
  2. Turn 5 sunstones into sunstone cores (20 sunstones remain, exactly enough for 5 golems together with the 5 sunstone cores)
  3. Create and finalise 5 golems, collecting the gems in your gem bag
  4. Return to the mine for a new inventory of 25 sunstones and repeat

To optimize the mining portion, take advantage of momentum. This gives a higher chance to receive a sunstone (up to 100% at level 92 Mining) and gives an additional 20% chance to mine an extra sunstone. Simply switch to a new sunstone rocks every time it depletes. Currently this only works properly with a rune pickaxe.

Using a large fur pouch allows five rotations before needing to bank to refill furs and empty the gem bag. Alternatively, players can mine sunstones in advance and complete golem crafting separately. Mining from the monolith increases the amount of time between interactions but reduces the overall sunstone collection rate.

Equipment

  2. ^ if actively mining to take advantage of momentum.
