The crystal pickaxe is a pickaxe used in Mining. It requires 71 Mining and Song of the Elves to create and use, with 50 Agility and 70 Attack required to wield it. It possesses the same special attack as the dragon pickaxe. A charged crystal pickaxe provides a chance to mine an ore every three ticks (with an additional 1/4 chance to reduce this to two ticks); excluding waiting for ores to respawn or having to move to a new resource, the crystal pickaxe is effectively a 3.03% increase in overall mining speed compared to a dragon pickaxe or 9.09% compared to a rune pickaxe. An uncharged crystal pickaxe has the same mining capabilities as a dragon pickaxe.

Players can create a crystal pickaxe via a singing bowl by combining a dragon pickaxe, 120 crystal shards, and a crystal tool seed. Doing so requires level 76 Smithing and Crafting to sing the crystal (the levels can be boosted), and grants 6,000 experience in both skills. Players can configure the charges while the pickaxe is in their bank by right-clicking on Configure-Charges, as long as players have the required materials. If the player does not meet the Smithing and Crafting requirements, they can have Conwenna or Reese sing the crystal for them for an extra 60 crystal shards, for a total of 180.

A dangerous death in PvP causes the crystal pickaxe to revert to a dragon pickaxe, which will then be dropped for the killer. All crystal shards will be lost should this happen.

The crystal pickaxe's special attack, Rock Knocker, temporarily boosts the player's Mining level by 3 (players will need to have 70 Attack and 50 Agility to utilise this special). This consumes 100% of the player's special attack energy.

As long as a player can wield the pickaxe, requiring 50 Agility and 70 Attack, the special attack can be used to mine with the pickaxe starting at 70 Mining.

Note that any levels boosted above 99 with the special attack will be treated as 99. Therefore, you will start to receive diminishing returns with the special attack at level 97 and 98, with there being no value in activating the special attack at level 99.

When created, the crystal pickaxe starts off at 10,000 charges and consumes charges like all crystal equipment, with one charge being consumed for each ore that is mined using it; once the pickaxe's charges have been fully depleted, it can still be used to mine, but will act like a dragon pickaxe. Wearing an elven signet or a celestial signet while using crystal equipment will provide a 10% chance to not consume charges.

The crystal pickaxe does not consume charges for certain activities where it provides no benefit compared to other pickaxes, or to a dragon pickaxe:

• Mining rocks in the Abyss
• Mining through a rockfall obstacle or fighting the guardians with a pickaxe in the Chambers of Xeric
• Mining the boulders in the Shaman Caves
• Mining salts in the Salt Mine
• Mining the rubble in Burgh de Rott during In Aid of the Myreque
• Mining dense essence in the dense essence mine
• Mining the rockfalls at the Motherlode Mine (the ore veins do benefit)
• Mining barriers or Het's Seal within the Path of Het in the Tombs of Amascut
• Mining guardian fragments or guardian essence at Guardians of the Rift (provided your mining level has not been boosted)

Bug:

If the player's Mining level is visibly boosted, mining within Guardians of the Rift does consume charges, even after the boost decays. This can cease spontaneously but always stops when the player relogs.

In order to add charges to the crystal pickaxe, crystal shards must be used on it (this can be done before it is inactive as well), with each shard granting 100 charges, up to a maximum of 20,000 (200 shards).

Using the shard cost of trading in enhanced crystal teleport seeds to Amrod, the most efficient option for buying crystal shards directly, the cost per charge is 225.22. The cost per charge while using an elven signet or a celestial signet is 202.70.

Dismantling a crystal pickaxe will return the dragon pickaxe and crystal tool seed to the player. Doing so will lose all crystal shard charges that were previously added.
