The crystal shield is a powerful degradable shield available after a player completes the Roving Elves quest, and a possible reward from this quest along with the crystal bow. To wield the crystal shield, a player must have 70 Defence, 50 Agility, and have completed the Roving Elves quest.

It can be made by combining 40 crystal shards with one crystal weapon seed at a singing bowl in Prifddinas. Alternatively, the crystal shield can be purchased from Islwyn for 750,000 coins even if the player chose the crystal bow as their initial quest reward for completing Roving Elves. It can be considered similar to Barrows equipment due to its substantial power and expensive repair costs. The crystal shield's melee defence bonuses are comparable to those of a dragon square shield. However, its ranged defence bonus is the highest of any one-handed shield.

Uses

The crystal shield's extremely high Ranged defence bonus and high melee defence bonuses makes it ideal for prolonged encounters where the player will take a lot of damage over time from multiple attack styles, such as when fighting the Dagannoth Kings or the Moons of Peril. While the elysian spirit shield and Dinh's bulwark are considered to be the best shields for tanking damage, the crystal shield being extremely cheap in relation to the elysian spirit shield and it allowing the player to wield a weapon at the same time compared to the bulwark makes it a solid choice even in late-game encounters like the Inferno and the Fortis Colosseum, where it is commonly used among learners of the content.

Despite this, the shield has no Magic defence bonuses whatsoever, along with having a small penalty to Ranged and Magic attack bonuses. While the former can be mitigated with Protect from Magic, the latter may prove troublesome if the player does not bring any armour switches. Additionally, the shield forbids the use of most Ranged weapons like bows and the toxic blowpipe, along with not allowing melee weapons to benefit from the accuracy and strength bonuses granted by defenders.

Degradation

The crystal shield starts with 2,500 charges but degrades 1 charge for every non-zero hit while it is equipped. Once the shield runs out of charges, it becomes inactive, losing all stats. In order to use it again, the player must either recharge it with crystal shards (if they have completed Song of the Elves), or revert it into a crystal weapon seed and convert it via Ilfeen. Note that if the player chooses the shield as a reward for completing Roving Elves, the crystal shield given to them will only begin with 500 charges instead.

Once the crystal shield has reverted to a crystal seed, a player has the option of either buying a new crystal shield for the cost of 750,000 coins from Islwyn, which doesn't require a seed, or having the seed converted back into a full shield or bow for a fee.

Ilfeen will recharge crystal weapon seeds into crystal bows, crystal halberds, or crystal shields. She can be found teleporting back and forth between two clearings in Isafdar. After completing Song of the Elves, she can be found in the south-west part of Prifddinas.

Initially, Ilfeen charges 750,000 coins to re-enchant a crystal seed into a crystal shield. However, the price is decreased by 150,000 coins each time Ilfeen re-enchants a seed for a player, in the following manner, until reaching the minimum recharge cost of 150,000 coins:

Enchantment Cost for re-enchantment Cost per hit
First 750,000 300
Second 600,000 240
Third 450,000 180
Fourth 300,000 120
Fifth and thereafter 150,000 60

The amount that Ilfeen charges is dependent on the total number of crystal seeds she has re-enchanted, not the number of crystal shields she has recharged. For example, a player who has previously paid Ilfeen to re-enchant a crystal seed into a crystal bow would only have to pay her 600,000 coins to re-enchant a seed into a crystal shield.

For players who have completed Song of the Elves, an alternative way of making crystal weapons and shields is using a crystal weapon seed and 40 crystal shards along with 78 Smithing and 78 Crafting on a singing bowl in Prifddinas. Players who do not meet the skill requirements can pay a nearby elf to create the weapon for an additional 20 shards. Crystal shards can be used on the shield to recharge the shield to a maximum of 20,000 charges, with each shard providing 100 charges, adding the shards to the shield does not require the Smithing and Crafting levels.

However, it is far more cost efficient in the long term to instead use the crystal shards on potions and use the money from selling them to re-enchant your crystal equipment.
