The crystal axe is an item used in Woodcutting. It requires level 71 Woodcutting and Song of the Elves to create and use, with 50 Agility and 70 Attack required to wield it. It possesses the same special attack as the dragon axe, and gives the player a 15% increase in efficiency chopping logs over the rune axe, surpassing the 10% increase of the dragon axe. This makes the crystal axe approximately 4.5% faster than the dragon axe.

Players can create a crystal axe via a singing bowl by combining a dragon axe, 120 crystal shards and a crystal tool seed. Doing so requires level 76 Smithing[boostable] and 76 Crafting[boostable] to sing the crystal, and grants 6,000 experience in both skills. Players can configure the charges while the axe is in their bank by right-clicking on Configure-Charges, as long as players have the required materials. If the player does not meet the Smithing and Crafting requirements, they can have Conwenna or Reese sing the crystal for them for an extra 60 crystal shards, for a total of 180.

After creation, the player can revert the crystal axe into a dragon axe. This process returns the crystal tool seed and the dragon axe to the player, but all crystal shards used to create or charge the axe are lost.

A dangerous death in PvP causes the crystal axe to revert to a dragon axe, which will then be dropped for the killer. All crystal shards will be lost should this happen.

Special attack

A player performs the crystal axe's special attack, Lumber Up.

The crystal axe has a special attack, Lumber Up, that it shares with the dragon, infernal, and 3rd age axes and their variants. It temporarily boosts the player's Woodcutting level by 3, consuming 100% of the player's special attack energy. The boost degrades every 60 seconds, with the player's Woodcutting level returning to normal after 3 minutes. Using Preserve can increase the duration by 50%.

Note that any levels boosted above 99 with the special attack will be treated as 99. Therefore, you will start to receive diminishing returns with the special attack at level 97 and 98[1], with visible boosts past level 99 only influencing the pet and clue nest chances.[2]

Charging

Crystal shards may be used on the axe to add charges beyond the initial 10,000 the axe holds when created, with each shard granting 100 charges, up to a maximum of 20,000. Charges may be added to the axe regardless of whether the axe currently holds charges or is in its inactive, zero-charge state.

Charge Consumption

As with all crystal equipment, one charge of the crystal axe is consumed for each item chopped, except during the following activities where it provides no benefit over other axes:

Once the axe's charges have been fully depleted, it can still be used to cut wood, but will act like a dragon axe. Wearing an elven signet (or Celestial signet) while using crystal equipment will provide a 10% chance to not consume charges.

Dismantling a crystal axe will return the dragon axe and crystal tool seed to the player. All crystal shard charges are lost in the process.

Development history

The version of the axe intended for release with The Eyes of Glouphrie.

The crystal axe was originally intended to release in 2006 as a reward from the The Eyes of Glouphrie quest. For unknown reasons, it was cut before release, leaving the crystal saw to be the reward instead. Despite this, its models and sound effects remained unused in the game files. The exact mechanics of how this version of the axe was intended to function are unknown, although the name of one of the sound effects associated with it indicates it would use charges like other crystal equipment.

A crystal axe would finally see a release in 2019 alongside the Song of the Elves quest after passing Content Poll 64.
