Bryophyta (, BRY-oh-FY-tə), the Moss Giantess, is a moss giant boss who can be found in her lair in the Varrock Sewers. The entrance to the lair is located just east of the moss giants in the sewers, and can be accessed by navigating the sewers, using the level 51 Agility shortcut from Edgeville Dungeon, or by teleporting with a giantsoul amulet.

A mossy key is needed to unlock the gate leading to Bryophyta's lair for the first time, but subsequent access to the lair does not require a key. The key will not be consumed when unlocking Bryophyta's lair.

The keys also open the chest found in her lair. Each opening uses one mossy key and requires one Bryophyta kill, similar to Obor and giant keys. Bryophyta respawns 15 ticks (9 seconds) after attempting to open her chest, or on leaving and re-entering the instance, regardless of whether the player has a mossy key in their inventory.

The chest is the sole source of Bryophyta's essence, which is used to make Bryophyta's staff. This item can store nature runes, and has a chance to not consume them when casting a spell that uses them.

Strategy

To access Bryophyta's lair, players will need a knife or a slash weapon to cut through the web if approaching via the Varrock Sewers. Members with level 51 Agility can bypass this by using the agility shortcut near Vannaka in the Edgeville Dungeon. Alternatively, a charged Giantsoul amulet can teleport players directly outside the entrance to her lair.

Unlike Obor’s chambers, where he is confined in a small pit, players are taken directly to Bryophyta’s chambers, where she attacks on sight. It is recommended to activate Protect from Magic before entering, or immediately upon entry, before opening the gate.

In members' worlds, Bryophyta can poison players, starting at 8 damage; it is advisable to bring poison protection even when using protection prayers.

During the fight, Bryophyta may summon three growthlings that must be killed with either an axe or magic secateurs. Bryophyta is immune to all damage (except poison and venom) while they are alive. Although the blessed axe is a woodcutting axe, it will not work. If no item with the "Axe" attack type is brought, players can take a bronze axe from the pile of logs in the lair; other types of axes, such as battleaxes or the zombie axe, cannot be used to kill the growthlings. Bryophyta can only summon one batch of growthlings at a time, and there is a cooldown between summons.

Free-to-play players should wear green d'hide armour for magic defence, along with a rune kiteshield and rune full helm for optimal protection against her attacks. God armours like Guthix armour offer a slight advantage with a +1 Prayer bonus per piece and are only marginally more expensive than rune armour. Offensively, a rune scimitar is recommended for its strength bonus. Players should have at least 50 strength, attack, and defence before attempting to fight Bryophyta.

Ranging Bryophyta is the best strategy for mid-level F2P players, with recommended stats of 60 Ranged, 40 Defence, and 37 Prayer. The ideal setup includes green d'hide armour, a coif, an amulet of power, and a maple shortbow with adamant arrows. Maintaining a safe distance is crucial, as she won’t move towards players and won’t use melee attacks if they are out of her reach. Using Protect from Magic will further minimise damage.

Bryophyta's 50% fire weakness makes magic highly viable in F2P. With at least 37 Prayer and 59 Magic, using Protect from Magic and Fire Blast offers the highest DPS for F2P players by a wide margin. As with the ranged strategy, keeping your distance is crucial. Best-in-slot magic gear with the Fire Staff is the recommended equipment.

25 June 2025 (Update)	Bryophyta no longer requires a mossy key to be fought. However, the first encounter with her will still require the key as a means to permanently unlock access to the boss. Bryophyta's drop table has been replaced with a simpler loot table similar to moss giants, with an increased chance at a mossy key, as well as a chance of giant bones for members. Bryophyta's original loot table has been moved to a chest within her lair, which is opened using a mossy key and can only be opened when she is defeated. Growthlings can now be finished off with one-click when equipping an axe, instead of needing to use the axe on it to do so. The cooldown that restricts the spawn of growthlings has been tweaked.

Trivia

Bryophyta is the scientific name for mosses.
The update which introduced Bryophyta also made Antipoison potions available to free-to-play players and able to be purchased from the Apothecary in Varrock.
- The idea of Bryophyta poisoning in free-to-play was scrapped prior to release; however, Antipoison potions still remain free-to-play.^[3]
It is possible to have growthlings summoned at the same time Bryophyta gets last damage (even without poison or venom) and fight them after her death.
As the axe is being used as a weapon and not as a tool, the player can still kill growthlings with an axe with a higher Woodcutting requirement than the player has.
