Bryophyta's staff is a staff requiring level 30 Attack and Magic to wield.

It can be obtained by paying 50,000 coins to Zaff, in central Varrock, with a Bryophyta's essence in your inventory. Members with 62 Crafting can make one, by using the essence on a battlestaff or vice versa. In both cases, the essence will be consumed, along with any battlestaff.

The staff can be charged with up to 1,000 nature runes. While the staff is equipped, it acts as if the player is holding the charged number of nature runes. When equipped and charged, it has a 1/15 chance to save a single charge, whenever a spell requiring nature runes is cast. Players can configure the charges while the weapon is in their bank by right-clicking on Configure-Charges, as long as players have the required materials.

The staff is untradeable while it has any charges. Players can use a right-click option to remove all of the staff's charges, but the nature runes stored within it are not returned. In addition, if the player dies with a charged staff, all charges except one will be lost. Ultimate ironmen do not keep additional charges on death.

The staff can be used along with a tome of fire to increase profits with High Level Alchemy; however, it takes several thousand spell casts to negate any resale tax, and hundreds of thousands more to pay for the staff alone.

It is required for a certain master clue scroll emote clue.

Combat stats

Its stats are almost identical to the members-only Ancient staff, differing only by its one tick slower melee attack speed and the absence of the negative Prayer bonus. As such, it has the highest Magic Attack and Magic Defence bonuses of any item in free-to-play (+5 higher than all elemental staves and the magic staff). Additionally, it sits between the rune warhammer and rune mace in melee combat; it is essentially a rune longsword for crushing, despite requiring levels expected of adamant weaponry. These factors combine to make it an exceptionally flexible and potent weapon for its class, and currently the highest DPS melee weapon for Attack levels 30 to 39.

Passive effect

While equipped and charged, the staff has a 1/15 chance of not consuming a charge when any spell that uses a nature rune is cast. When the staff's effect activates, the message Your staff saved you a nature rune. is displayed. If a spell costs multiple nature runes to cast, only one rune is saved by the staff in case of a successful activation.[1] When a charge is saved, it can be saved again at the same chance. The average number of charges per nature rune (if casting a spell that costs one nature rune per cast) can be represented as a geometric series , which converges to (15/14)x ≈ 1.071x charges per x nature runes. Thus the effective number of nature runes for a fully charged staff is 1,071.43 on average, with a 95% chance of lying between 1,055 and 1,089.

At current market prices, this saves an average of 12.21 coins per rune consumed, meaning approximately 363,707 casts are required before the staff will pay for itself, without considering the opportunity cost of saving other coins by using an elemental staff. However, considering the elemental runes used may result in a loss. For example, casting high alchemy with a Bryophyta's staff instead of a fire staff results in an average cost change of −12.79 coins per cast (though the use of a Tome of fire at the same time would negate this). When selling back the staff, assuming only the 2% GE tax is used as cost with the Tome of fire, approximately 7,275 casts are required before one would start turning a profit from using the staff. When using High Level Alchemy at max efficiency (1200 cast per hour), one would expect a profit after approximately 6.1 hours of spell casting.

(Update | poll)

Bryophyta's staff is a now a free-to-play item, and can now be made there by bringing Bryophyta's essence and 50,000 coins to Zaff.

Trivia

  • While 363,707 casts would be required for the staff to pay for itself, a player can go from 55-99 magic with only 197,967 casts of High Level Alchemy. Despite this, a player may still find the staff to be profitable if they are able to sell it for a good price once they are finished using it.
  • It is the equivalent of the nature staff from RuneScape 3, released 8 years prior.
