Chaos runes are used for low level missile spells, such as wind bolt, water bolt, earth bolt and fire bolt. They are also used to charge the bone staff, warped sceptre, trident of the seas, trident of the swamp, the eye of ayak, and Tumeken's shadow.

They spawn in the Wilderness near some moss giants, in the north-west corner of the Dark Warriors' Fortress, and can also be bought from the Varrock and Port Sarim magic shops.

Members can make them with the Runecraft skill at level 35 at the Chaos Altar, by having pure essence in the inventory and a chaos tiara equipped or a chaos talisman in the inventory, granting 8.5 experience per rune crafted. At level 74 Runecraft and above, two chaos runes are made per essence at the Chaos Altar.

Barbarian Assault uses a unique variant of chaos runes that are untradeable and have an alchemy value of 0 to prevent potential exploits. Nightmare Zone also uses a variant, also being untradeable and having an alchemy value of 0, in addition to being unusable for non-combat spells.
