Aether runes are combination runes that count as two separate runes: one cosmic rune and one soul rune. Thus, any spell requiring one cosmic rune, one soul rune, or both will spend only one aether rune.
Aether runes can be used to cast Death Charge, Dark Demonbane, and summon thralls with just four runes (aether, blood, death, and fire runes), meaning the divine rune pouch can hold all runes required for these three spells.
Aether runes are also required to create radiant oathplate armour: 2,500 runes are comsumed for each armour piece converted, requiring a total of 7,500 aether runes to create a full set of radiant oathplate armour.
They can be created with level 90 Runecraft using an aether catalyst.
Compared to using soul and cosmic runes separately, using a single aether rune costs 270 more.
Runecraft info
As the true Soul Altar and soul talisman are not currently accessible, crafting aether runes require the use of Magic Imbue to bypass the talisman requirement. As such, players must bring pure essence, soul runes, and aether catalysts to the Cosmic Altar (for 20.0 Runecraft experience per rune), and then use the soul runes on the altar.
Any bonuses that increase aether rune output will increase the input cost of aether catalysts. This means that using Raiments of the Eye or scarred extracts to increase the yield of aether runes will still require one catalyst per rune crafted. However, using these bonuses will reduce the number of soul runes needed to craft aether runes.
Crafting combination runes has a 50% success rate, which is increased to 100% while wearing a binding necklace. Should the player choose not to use a binding necklace, failed aether runes will not consume any aether catalysts or scarred extracts, though the soul runes and essences will still be destroyed like any other combination rune.

Trivia
- Aether refers to a hypothetical element which was used to explain the propagation of light and gravity in the vacuum of space. In Greek mythology, Aether is a primordial god who is a personification of the upper sky; the word itself (αἰθήρ) in Ancient Greek also means "pure, fresh air" or "clear sky".
