The purging staff is a one-handed magic demonbane weapon requiring level 77 Magic and 50 Attack to wield. It is made by using a tormented synapse on an anvil with a battlestaff, iron bar, and a hammer in the inventory. This requires level 74 Crafting^[boostable], level 55 Smithing^{[not boostable]}, and having read Duradel's notes after completion of While Guthix Sleeps.

The purging staff can autocast offensive Arceuus or Standard spellbook spells, and its +37 magic attack and +25 magic defence bonuses are the highest of any weapon in the game, surpassing even the Kodai wand and Tumeken's shadow. In addition, the staff possesses a special attack as well as passive effects that makes it ideal for demonbane spells.

The process to create the purging staff can be reversed via the 'Revert' option, returning only the tormented synapse as a result. A player killer will receive the synapse from their opponent if it is not one of their protected items.

The staff has a passive effect which doubles the base accuracy bonus of demonbane spells from 20% to 40%. If under the effects of the Mark of Darkness spell, the staff further doubles the accuracy and damage bonus, giving an 80% accuracy and 50% damage bonus. With the staff's base magic damage bonus of 10%, this makes it one of the best weapons to use against demonic creatures.

Additionally, the staff also multiplies the duration of the Mark of Darkness spell by five times. Switching weapons afterward will not reduce the duration back to normal, nor will it remove the Mark of Darkness.

The purging staff has a special attack, Scatter ashes, which drains 25% of the player's special attack energy and requires being on the Arceuus spellbook.

Scatter ashes uses the best demonbane spell the player can cast; if the demonic creature targeted dies from Scatter ashes, the special attack energy used is refunded, and the player's next attack can be used three ticks earlier.

In practice, using Scatter ashes to kill a target will effectively change the player's attack speed from 5 down to 3. This is because the 3 tick reduction is processed too late for the player to attack 2 ticks later. Scatter ashes is truly reducing attack delay by 3 though - this can be shown by using Scatter ashes and then eating a piece of food, which will increase attack delay by 3. In this case, the player will be able to attack again after 5 ticks, instead of the expected 3+3=6 ticks later.

Below the required level, a message will appear stating "You attempt to attach the synapse to the staff, but burn yourself in the process. You'll need a Crafting level of 74 to craft a purging staff." This will deal 4 damage to the player, but cannot kill them; attempting to make the staff without the Crafting level and having less than 6 hitpoints will prompt the character to state "I'm not sure I want to try that when I'm this injured."

The first purging staff created on an account grants 730 Crafting experience, whilst subsequent ones grant 73 experience afterwards.
