Yama, the Master of Pacts[1] is a powerful demonic duo-focused boss who dwells in Yama's Domain found in the depths of the Chasm of Fire.
In order to access Yama, the player must have completed A Kingdom Divided, then return to the Chasm of Fire after the quest and head to his domain after speaking to the Voice of Yama (who is on the bottom floor of the chasm). After speaking to him, Yama will offer a contract that allows the player to fight an inhibited form as "revenge", granting the player the ability to challenge him.
The base fight places emphasis on movements and prayer switching, and was intended by the developers to be a step up from the post-Desert Treasure II fights of the Forgotten Four[2]. The boss also has tradeable contracts to fight him in a stronger form. These contracts can either allow the player to fight him alone or in some cases, with another player.
Yama is similar to the Royal Titans in that he can be fought alongside a partner in his base form. Several mechanics are easier to handle in a pair, and loot is distributed accordingly based on the player's damage dealt in the fight.
Unique rewards from the fight include the dossier, which provides various contracts (including some exclusive to him only) and an upgrade to Death Charge; the soulflame horn, which has a special attack that boosts allies' next melee attack; and oathplate armour, best-in-slot slash armour. Yama may also drop shards of said armour as a bad luck mitigation of sorts.
Yama also functions as his own scoreboard. When spoken to and asked if he is keeping records on the player, Yama will summon an imp to fetch the statistics, then promptly incinerate the imp.
Group ironman players will lose their prestige upon entering the encounter with a player outside of their group.

History
Yama is an opportunistic demon, taking advantage of the power vacuum left after the gods were banished from Gielinor by Guthix.[3] He is worshipped by the Disciples of Yama, a group of Zamorakian cultists who were formerly known as the Disciples of Chaos until Yama gained influence over them,[4] whose initiates participate in a ritual of human sacrifice and staring into a fire so bright that they lose their vision. He also had some influence over the politics of Great Kourend through Sophia Hughes, who was part of the cult, though its not known if she was part of them before Yama's arrival.
He also has a priest-like figure, the Voice of Yama, that he uses to convey messages to, as well as judges to mete punishment out to both his enemies and those who take advantage of his generosity. Following the opening of Kourend to the human kingdoms east of them, Yama originally allowed adventurers to slay his minions as long as they are on a Slayer task for them,[5] although the reason behind was unknown at the time.
Apart from the human followers, Yama has a sizable amount of demonic minions outside of the Voice and judge, mostly consisting of lesser, greater, and black demons, although he also has a few imps in his service.
During the events of A Kingdom Divided, Yama has Sophia targeted for death after she had taken advantage of his generosity. However, he was unable to find her until Sophia summoned a Judge of Yama in order to kill an adventurer who was responsible for her arrest, along with Commander Fullore. The judge quickly burnt Sophia to a crisp before focusing on the two of them. The judge declared that they were Yama's enemies since they had been accused alongside endangering the work of his children. The adventurer challenged the judge, who stated that if they were not guilty, they would be free of their sins. The adventurer defeated the judge, presumably making them innocent for the time being in Yama's eyes. The adventurer was also tasked with severing the connection between Yama and his followers with a device powered by the Dark Altar. However, he caught wind of the plot and had a disciple seize it from them while implanting a memory to make them believe they had succeeded.
After the quest, the adventurer found a group of Shayzien soldiers stationed outside the Chasm, who were on orders to observe activity in the chasm, as the higher-ups were concerned about vile demons being so close to their base. The adventurer ventured inside and was informed by the Voice of Yama that Yama wished to talk to them in person, teleporting them to his domain. There, they asked him how he was still able to communicate with his followers, believing their mission had been a success. Yama revealed that they were quite predictable and had implanted a false memory, which angered the adventurer, who wanted revenge. He agreed to let them fight him under the condition that if they were to lose, their soul would be his for all eternity. The adventurer found this too extreme, so he offered to let them fight a weaker version of him and hold their soul for a year after their final rest if he won. The adventurer agreed to the terms and signed the contract. They also noticed in the contract that there were more contracted fights and asked him about it. Yama explained that his followers needed to be pushed and reformed, and by killing them in his preference, they could potentially find these contracts which would make their fight harder, but for guaranteed rewards. He also told them that they could alternatively acquire them by defeating him in battle.
An alternative version of Yama later learned about the Leagues and with great interest, decided to oversee the next iteration himself, imprisoning The Sage and learning much about the mode from them. He had also planned this so he could guarantee a passage for himself into the next iteration once the event was over. As the adventurer spoke to Yama, he told them that he would be willing to give them some of his powers and treasures as long as they participated.
Transportation
The quickest methods of reaching the Chasm of Fire, where Yama resides, are:
- Using a chasm teleport scroll, which teleports the player next to the Voice of Yama
- Fairy ring code DJR then run north-west
- History and hearsay teleport on Kharedst's memoirs/book of the dead, then run north
Contract variants
The fight with Yama can be varied through various contracts, which change his combat stats and add additional mechanics.
Uniquely, stat draining effects which reference Yama's maximum stats only consider his normal form. For example, the accursed sceptre special attack can drain stats twice.

Contracts
- See Chasm of Fire § Contracts for information on contracts dropped by demons.
Yama can be offered contracts to alter the nature of the fight. Aquisition contracts can only be acquired from a dossier, which Yama uncommonly drops. The combat contracts for the purifying sigil can be acquired from both this dossier and killing Yama's demons in various manners. Similar in function to awakener's orbs, these contracts are tradeable and are consumed upon attempting the fight.
There are several contracts which modify the fight to some degree:

Some of these contracts have a difficulty comparable to that of the awakened variants of the post-quest Desert Treasure II bosses, and defeating Yama with these contracts will grant the player with purifying sigil pieces, which are used to grant the ability to use Radiant Oathplate armour, which is white in colour. Apart from Yama's stats being adjusted, these contracted fights add or modify existing mechanics from the original fight.
The resource and pet contracts allow two players to challenge Yama, as long as one of these two players has the contract to show him. The equipment and sigil contracts can only be completed alone. If Yama is defeated after being shown the sigil or pet contracts, the player will be refunded the contract.
A "custom contract" fight can be started with one player giving Yama 100 noted pineapple pizzas, which initiates a fight the same as the worms/shard/catalyst contracts. As with the other contracts, the pizzas will only last for one attempt, and are not refunded regardless of victory or defeat.
Unlike the awakened Desert Treasure II bosses, successfully completed contracted fights are not tracked separately.
Fight overview
Yama can be fought alone or with another player that has signed the initial contract with him. His stats do not change in either size. When accounting for stat drains, his stats can be drained a maximum of 80 Defence levels (to 145). If using the Emberlight's special attack, his Attack and Strength stats can be drained 120/150 levels respectively to a cap of 200. Not only is Yama considered demonic, he also is more vulnerable to demonbane weapons than other demons; all demonbane modifiers are increased by 20%. This means that Emberlight, for example, has an accuracy and damage increase of 84% against Yama (compared to the usual 70% against demonic creatures).
Yama utilises all forms of combat; swinging his axe with melee, engulfing players in shadow with ranged or fire with magic. Yama has two distinct combat behaviours in which he checks the weapon being used by his current target; if a melee weapon is used, Yama will close the distance. If a magic or ranged weapon is being used, he will instead stay still and attack from afar. This check additionally influences his magic defence. His melee attacks can hit through prayer and will hit everyone within three tiles of his target, while the ranged and magic attacks are fully blocked with prayer. Yama also inflicts poison starting at 20, the highest possible value. He also makes use of shadow and fire-based elemental attacks, which deal heavy damage. These attacks can only be fully blocked by standing on the according glyph to gain temporary protection against such attacks. Though he only focuses on one player, Yama can change aggression to the other player in duo encounters.
Shortly after 66.6% and 33.3% of his health, Yama will slam the pommel of his axe to the ground, teleporting the player to the pockets of land to the side of the arena, where a Judge of Yama must be defeated in order to continue the fight. After the threshold is reached but before he teleports the players, he gains 50% damage resistance to any attacks. The Judge prays against two combat styles, with one of them always being ranged, and reactively prays against the last attack, so players must bring melee and magic in order to kill it efficiently. After the judge is slain, Yama begins the next phase.
In the final phase, Yama will remain static in the centre of the room, increasing all of his defence bonuses and using one of two different combat behaviours; if the target is out of melee range, he will launch three sets of fireballs at everyone in the arena, whereas being in melee range will result in a quick swipe from his axe that additionally summons a flare. Every auto-attack switches between styles (if he used shadow on the previous hit, then he uses magic on the next hit). His ranged and magic attacks will now pierce prayer (although very negligible), while the melee attack deals even more damage. Players must defeat Yama as quickly as possible while handling numerous rapid shadow waves and flares, the latter of which will damage players and heal Yama if not destroyed.
After Yama is defeated, he will teleport back to his throne and snap his fingers, rewarding players for their efforts. He can be immediately challenged again if desired.
Player death
Unlike most other bosses, players who die fighting Yama are sent back to the Voice of Yama instead of their respawn point, where their graves are also located. Players will have their reclamation fee reduced by 75% until they have 10 kills, after which the standard death cost will apply.

Drops
The following drop rates are provided by Jagex, unless otherwise specified.
After being defeated, Yama will teleport back to his throne and snap his fingers, after which the rewards will be dropped in front of him. Drops are rolled for until the roll results in a success:
- If a player deals less than 375 damage (15%), roll the junk drop table.
- Otherwise, roll 1/120 for the unique drop table (scales with contribution).
- If successful, roll 3/5 for a piece of oathplate armour and 2/5 for the soulflame horn.
- If unsuccessful, roll 1/12 for the dossier (scales with contribution).
- If unsuccessful, roll 1/30 for the forgotten lockbox.
- If unsuccessful, roll 1/15 for 12 oathplate shards (quantity scales with contribution).
- If unsuccessful, the standard table is rolled.
- Roll again for tertiary drops: 1/2,500 for Yami and 1/30 for an elite clue.
If the player is fighting Yama under any contract other than the Contract of familiar acquisition, the standard table will not be rolled. Uniques can still be obtained from any contracted fight alongside the guaranteed rewards.
Unlike other group bosses, Yama rolls drops for each player individually in a duo encounter, rather than rolling for a unique for the kill. This means that two uniques can be obtained per encounter, with the rate of getting a unique based on contribution. For example, if both players have 50% contribution, both players will roll for the unique drop table at 1/240 chance each, rather than 1/120 and then choosing which player obtains it.
Contribution
The drop rates and quantities listed below assume Yama is killed by one player.
With two players, the quantities of regular items and drop rates of some unique items scale linearly, proportional to damage dealt by a given player, similarly to the Royal Titans. For example, a player who deals 1,000 damage to Yama, or 40% of his health, is eligible to receive 16,000 fire runes, 40% of the maximum.
If one player dies during a duo encounter, their contribution is not redistributed to the surviving player.

Trivia
- Unlike other bosses, who have a kill count (including those that return after being killed lore-wise), Yama's "kill count" is instead tracked as "success count". Likewise, the "deaths" at the boss are labeled as "Soul Debt".
- In Hindu mythology, Yama is the god of death and justice. In some Buddhist traditions, Yama is regarded as the king of hell, responsible for judging the dead and dispatching them to the appropriate rebirth. The concept for the boss was originally inspired by these deities.[6]
- Yama enjoys pizza.[7] He appears to enjoy pineapple on pizza[8], but something spicy would suit him better.[9] This sparked rumours that he would introduce a spicy pizza (like jalapeno) on launch.
- As part of the contract signed with Yama, if a player shows him a full Pizza of any type he will always take a slice, even if the player refuses to give it to him.
- If a 1/2 pizza is offered, he will refuse, even if the player offers him pizza that he had already eaten from.
- When shown a Pineapple pizza, Yama will say "Pineapple pizza, topped with delicious acidic flavours and the angry tears of a thousand nay-sayers. Excellent. Hand me it." If given to Yama, he will then remark about jalapeno pizzas, though no such item exists in-game.
- Yama's remark "angry tears of a thousand nay-sayers" is a reference to how many people consider pineapple as a topping to be highly controversial.
- Upon trying to teleport out after offering Yama a pizza, Yama will stop the player, stating "You thought you could escape with your pizza? I'm afraid not (player name)."
- Logging out will result in the player's pizza being eaten anyway upon logging back in, though there is no dialogue accompanying this.
- If the player offers a burnt pizza, Yama will question the player's intention as humour, but begrudgingly take it due to the contract's terms before promptly incinerating it at the player's suggestion.
- He also might enjoy a breakfast of cheese and tomato on sourdough.[10] Or a Tomato and Jalapeño picadillo with cheese on the side for Lunch.
- It is likely that all mentions of "spicy" and "jalapeño" are a reference to the cut Arceuus spellbook rework spell which appears to be "Bones to jalapeño."
- As part of the contract signed with Yama, if a player shows him a full Pizza of any type he will always take a slice, even if the player refuses to give it to him.
- Yama will make a comment judging the player's overall performance after a fight or after the player teleports away. Sol Heredit also comments on the player's performance, but only whether they have won or lost.
- Upon learning that their memories were altered by Yama during A Kingdom Divided, the player will remark that this is the second time someone has modified their memories [11]. It is likely that this is a reference to Icthlarin's Little Helper, as the player is aware of their mind being manipulated through their cat and the Sphinx.
- While the player's mind is also modified during Forgettable Tale..., the player is not aware of it.
- All of Yama's contracts have the word "CONTRNCT" written on the item in Morse Code.
- The second N (-.) is likely meant to be an A (.-), though the order of the dots and dashes is reversed.
- Yama utilises two different sound effects when a unique drop is awarded. If the player rolls a dossier, forgotten lockbox or oathplate shards, the sound effect used is the same as obtaining uniques from other bosses, such as Araxxor. If the player rolls a soulflame horn or oathplate armour piece, a deeper-sounding variant of this effect is used instead.
- Yama had a festive override wearing a santa hat during the 2025 Christmas event.
- An ornament kit for the Soulreaper axe that makes the axe appear visually similar to Yama's axe was released as part of the Demonic Pacts League.
