The Chasm of Fire is a dungeon located in the north-west corner of Shayzien, housing a variety of demons led by Yama, the Master of Pacts.
After completion of A Kingdom Divided, a group of five Shayzien soldiers (a lieutenant, sergeant, and three soldiers) will be found loitering around the entrance. Likewise, the player can access Yama's Domain by speaking to the Voice of Yama at the bottom level of the chasm.
Players can use the lifts to travel between floors. Two shortcuts can be found in the dungeon; one at the entrance, requiring 83 Agility and another by the first lift, requiring 73 Agility. The first shortcut drops players off on the third floor by the Voice of Yama, while the second shortcut takes players to the greater demon area and leads to another two shortcuts leading to the lift to the third floor. These shortcuts are one-way only.
A dwarf multicannon can be used in the chasm, although it is not a multi-combat area. There are several safespots for killing greater demons on the middle floor, by utilising the piles of rocks and the narrow pathways. Resurrection spells cannot be cast whilst within the Chasm of Fire (excluding Yama's arena) with the message "You can't resurrect a thrall here." appearing when attempting to do so.
Transportation
There are several ways to reach the dungeon:
- A chasm teleport scroll brings players inside the dungeon on the bottom floor (only if you've previously been to Great Kourend).
- The Fairy ring code DJR will bring the players just south-east of the Chasm (only if you've previously been to Great Kourend).
- Using Kharedst's memoirs to teleport to the Graveyard of Heroes via reminiscing "History and Hearsay". Requires completion of Tale of the Righteous.
- Using Battlefront teleport brings players just north-west of the chasm.
- Using a skills necklace to teleport to the Farming Guild, and then running south-east. A form of antipoison is recommended due to lizardmen on the way.
Contracts
Yama can be offered contracts to alter the nature of the fight. Resource/material contracts can only be acquired from a dossier, which Yama uncommonly drops. The combat contracts for the purifying sigil can be acquired from both this dossier and killing Yama's demons in various manners. Similar in function to awakener's orbs, these contracts are tradeable and are consumed upon attempting the fight.
Upon speaking to Yama and signing a contract with him, the demons in the dungeon have a chance to drop contracts for the purifying sigil; the other contracts are not available in this manner, and are instead obtained from the dossier, which Yama infrequently drops.
Sigils
After signing Yama's initial contract, attacking any demon in this location will cause a Green, Blue, Yellow, Red, or Purple sigil to appear over their head, indicating the preferred method Yama wants them to die. Satisfying this request, by using a specific weapon type for the killing blow, will double the drop chance of the contract associated with that weapon. Satisfying the yellow sigil via a special attack boosts the drop rate by 5x instead, as special attack energy is a finite resource.[1]
As long as this sigil system has been activated by Yama, players may use any valid weapon to selectively farm any desired contract at unboosted rates. If a weapon counts for any of these categories, the demon will drop double ashes to inform the player that the style is valid.
The active sigil is unique to each player, and has a chance to change after 32 kills of any type of demon in the Chasm. This includes kills not made under the active condition, but excludes kills that were a result of indirect damage (e.g., poison or burns). Sigil streaks (32 kills in the same style) can repeat the same colour multiple times in a row. It is not affected by switching worlds or by real time. If the player is unsure of what method is needed, they can speak to the Disciple of Yama to learn of the preferred method.
| Sigil | Condition | Potential contract reward | Ideal method |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kill the demon with Heavy Ranged weapons; e.g., crossbows, ballistae, chinchompas. | Hunters' sunlight crossbow or Karil's crossbow (both 3-tick heavy ranged crossbows on rapid) with dwarf multicannon.[a] | ||
| Kill the demon with a spell; e.g Dark Demonbane or any other manually/autocastable spell.
Powered staves, such as Tumeken's shadow, will not count for this method. Damaging bind spells will also not count for this method, as they are for a different method. |
Best demonbane spell available; if not, use water spells, as demons have a 40% water weakness. | ||
| Kill the demon with a special attack.[b] | Purging staff (special attack costs 25%, is refunded if attack kills demon)[2] or Soulreaper axe[3] (can special every other attack)
Otherwise, use a low energy cost weapon such as burning claws, dragon dagger, or Osmumten's fang. Death Charge and lightbearer make this kill method far more consistent. | ||
| Kill the demon with a two-handed melee weapon of any sort (claws, halberd, mauls, two-handed swords, etc.) [c] | Use a 4 or 5-tick two-handed melee weapon such as Scythe of vitur, noxious halberd, abyssal bludgeon, zamorakian spear, burning claws, etc. | ||
| Kill the demon while it is bound or by a damaging bind spell (e.g grasp spells) |

Mining
On the third level of the dungeon, by the gibbet connecting the two floors, is a small Mining and Smithing area containing infernal shale rocks and infernal shale deposits, which can be mined at level 78 (boostable). Jim, an imp overseeing the area, will provide players with a piece of cloth that they can use to mine faster.
A furnace and anvil can also be found in the area which is used to process crushed infernal shale and oathplate shards at level 83 Smithing (boostable) to begin the process of creating oathplate armour.

Trivia
- Before an update that remodeled the Chasm, players could use an oculus orb, to see a hidden level beneath the bottom level. This level is inaccessible. When asked about this, Mod West stated "Figured I'd leave the bottom floor available, y'know, just in case."[4]
