Crushed infernal shale is made by crushing infernal shale with a hammer and chisel, and is used to create infernal nuggets, which can then be turned into oathplate armour. Nuggets can be created with level 83 Smithing by combining 28 crushed infernal shale with 5 oathplate shards.

In total, 2,520 crushed infernal shale must be combined with 450 oathplate shards to make 9 infernal plates in order to smith any individual piece of oathplate armour.

Crushing the shale provides no experience, and it will not automatically process, so each infernal shale must be individually clicked. Repeatedly using a chisel on the very last shale in the inventory is the easiest way to process infernal shale.

The Imcando hammer is an acceptable kind of hammer while equipped or in the inventory.
