Crushed infernal shale is only obtainable in the infernal shale resource area of the Chasm of Fire. Infernal shale is an untradeable resource that must be crushed with a hammer (the Incamdo hammer will work) and chisel to make crushed infernal shale. Crushed infernal shale is tradeable and is used as a secondary component for crafting Infernal nuggets—which are subsequently used to craft Oathplate armour—from the uncommonly dropped Oathplate shards from Yama. There is no bank or deposit box nearby, but crushed infernal shale is stackable.

There are several ways to access the Chasm of Fire, listed in order of preference on the Chasm of Fire page.

The infernal shale resource area can be quickly reached within the Chasm of Fire by using the chain agility shortcut (requires 83+ ) next to the entrance of the Chasm of Fire or by using the platform edge to gap jumps (requires 73+ ) located to the north of the entrance of the Chasm of Fire. Beware the greater demons and black demons which are aggressive and can attack the player as they travel through the Chasm of Fire. 43+ is recommended to be able to use Protect from Melee. Once past the fire barrier that separates the infernal shale resource area from the main area of the lower floor of the Chasm of Fire, players are safe from the demons.

Using tick manipulation to mine the infernal shale rocks using Jim's wet cloth is a very high intensity method for gathering infernal shale compared to the low intensity and moderate intensity methods for obtaining infernal shale. Profits and experience rates are expected to be much higher than the other two options to account for the higher intensity.

Infernal shale rocks can be mined using tick manipulation every 3 ticks (1.8s), and infernal shale can be crushed in 0 ticks (0s), leading to the maximum theoretical rate of infernal shale mined and crushed per hour of 2000 and 2000×1.3 = 2600, respectively. However, there is a chance to fail to mine infernal rocks, and tick-perfect clicking for longer sessions can be difficult. A more realistic rate of 1500–1700 infernal shale mined—including stopping mining between full inventories of infernal shale to crush a full inventory at once—is more realistic. At a rate of between 1500—1700 infernal shale per hour, the player will net between 1900—2200 crushed infernal shale per hour at a 1.3 to 1 ratio of crushed infernal shale to infernal shale. Actual mining rates may vary based on the accuracy of clicks and luck.

Mining enhancers will not benefit the rocks, although the celestial ring's invisible level bonus can still help.
