Infernal shale rocks are a type of protruding rock containing infernal shale. They can be found inside the north-east section of the bottom level in the Chasm of Fire, and require level 78 Mining to mine. The rocks can only be accessed after speaking to Yama and agreeing to sign his contract. With a chisel and hammer, the mined infernal shale can be broken down into crushed infernal shale.

Infernal shale rocks take 9 ticks (5.4s) to respawn and seem to be between iron and coal in time to mine. The amount of Mining experience the rocks give is not a fixed amount, but rather one of 10 possible values ranging from 13.2 to 100 per shale mined. Mining enhancers do not benefit infernal shale.^[1]

Infernal shale rocks can be mined at a faster rate with the use of Jim's wet cloth, obtained from Jim after signing his contract. The player must click the rock to mine it shortly after they finish wiping their brow, resulting in a powerful swing that can usually instantly mine the rock, depending on the player's Mining level. If the rock is clicked too soon while the player is still wiping their forehead, the player will receive the message You can't swing a pickaxe whilst wiping your forehead!. Although superficially similar to other 3-tick Mining methods, the click rhythm when using the cloth is very different to standard tick manipulation methods, and attempting to use the same timing in other locations will result in no benefit or active detriment to the player's experience rates.

One simple way to time mining the rocks is to first wipe with Jim's wet cloth, then move to the next rock, and finally click to mine the rock. This can be repeated in a steady rhythm across three available rocks, and will yield roughly 40–50k Mining experience per hour with decent execution.

Starting another cycle by wiping with Jim's wet cloth on the same game tick that the player would receive the infernal shale from a previous cycle can yield rates of over 60k Mining experience per hour.

Mining an infernal shale may grant any of the following amounts of Mining experience:

The mining gem drop table has a 1/256 chance to roll on every mining attempt;^[2] if the player is wearing a charged amulet of glory, amulet of glory (t), or amulet of eternal glory, the probability increases to 1/64.2.^[3][4] If the table successfully rolls, the player may receive an uncut gem or nothing, and in either case can not receive an ore.^[5] This neither depletes the rock nor grants Mining experience. The rates shown are for every mining attempt.
