Burn

Burn is a temporary status effect that causes an entity to lose a set amount of hitpoints over a period of time. Players or NPCs who are burning will be dealt one hitpoint of damage every four ticks (2.4 seconds). Over the course of the burn, entities will lose 10 hitpoints over 40 ticks (24 seconds), or 5 hitpoints over 20 ticks (12 seconds) in the case of the scorching bow's special attack.
Up to 5 separate instances of the burn effect can be inflicted at once; in this case the frequency of damage will remain unchanged at once every four ticks, but each time the entity will take damage equal to the number of burn stacks they currently have. After 5 burn stacks, any further burn instances will be discarded; the oldest burn instance with the lowest time remaining will not be replaced.
Burn damage is coded as ranged damage, and thus will be reduced by a NPC's damage style reductions if applicable. For example, Tekton and Dusk are both immune to ranged attacks, meaning they will not take burn damage. The Protect from Missiles prayer will not reduce burn damage.
The burn effect is currently only applied by the burning claws special attack, scorching bow special attack, Arkan blade special attack, Incendiary cannonballs, and with a 20% chance on hits with the eclipse atlatl when used with the full eclipse moon armour set. The scorching bow special attack only works against demons. Fire spells apply a burn only when used against the Maggot King.
Certain monsters are immune to burns at or below a certain severity. There are 4 levels of burn severity:
- Incendiary burns, applied by Incendiary cannonballs. These burns ignore the targeted monster's burn immunity altogether.
- Strong burns, sometimes called sunfire burns (inflicted by the eclipse moon armour set and the Arkan blade). TzKal-Zuk, Slug Prince, Gemstone Crab, sea creatures (other than birds), and the three Moons of Peril are the only NPCs currently known to be immune to strong burns.
- Normal burns (inflicted by burning claws and scorching bow). Cerberus and the red phase of Alchemical Hydra are immune to normal burns.
- Weak burns (currently inaccessible). Hellhounds, Chromatic dragons and their Brutal dragon counterparts, and some superior slayer monsters, are immune to weak burns.
Note that the burn severity of an attack is not strictly related to the amount of damage it deals over its full duration.
Burn damage can be cleared through use of an Ornate rejuvenation pool, or by entering or leaving a player-owned house.
Similar mechanics
Other NPCs can inflict damage over time that are described as burns by game messages, but these mechanics are not true burn effects (many also predate the burn status itself): the hitsplat uses the regular damage hitsplat rather than the burn hitsplat, and do not stack more than once.
- The fires launched by the Alchemical Hydra during its flame phase can deal up to 25 damage if hit, then subsequently dealing 5 damage for 5 hits.
- The burning orb that may appear during the fight with Akkha periodically deals 5 damage for several hits, and is able to spread to adjacent unaffected players.
- The Great Olm's burn attack deals 6 instances of 5 damage at intervals of 8 ticks, lowering combat stats by 2 each time, and is able to spread to adjacent unaffected players.
- The Judge of Yama's fire waves deal up to 20 damage if hit, then subsequently deal 1-2 damage for 5 hits.
