The eclipse atlatl is a non-degradable two-handed ranged weapon that requires level 75 Ranged, 50 Attack, and 50 Strength to equip. It can be obtained as a possible reward from the Lunar Chest in Neypotzli. It uses atlatl darts as ammunition, which can be collected by Ava's devices.

Despite not being strung and using a “throwing” attack animation, the atlatl is categorically a bow and not a thrown weapon, and therefore deals standard-type damage.

Its max hit is determined by the player's melee strength bonus, while accuracy is still based on their ranged bonus, which is a unique mechanic among ranged weapons.

The atlatl's max hit mechanic means it pairs unusually with other equipment; endgame ranged gear is not best-in-slot as usual. Instead, the atlatl performs better against low-defence enemies when used in conjunction with high-strength equipment (e.g. amulet of strength, dragon boots), while end-game tribrid equipment such as Barrows gloves, amulet of fury, and aranea boots will usually outperform specialised ranged gear against high-defence enemies.

Though the atlatl's max hit is based on visible boosts to the player's Strength level (including potions), it does not benefit from melee prayers. Ranged prayers boost both accuracy and damage. Additionally, it uses the melee bonuses from the slayer helmet and salve amulets, but gains increased damage from Void Knight equipment whilst wearing the void ranger helm rather than the void melee helm.

When using the rapid attack style, up to 2,000 darts may be fired per hour. This makes the cost per hour 41,200 with Ava's assembler, 57,680 with Ava's accumulator if not picking up used ammo, or 206,000 if choosing to use a different cape for more damage, such as the Infernal cape.

The base attack speed of the Atlatl varies; in player versus monster encounters, its attack speed on rapid is 3, or equal to shortbows. During player versus player combat, its attack speed is 4, unless the full set is worn.

Special attack

A player performing the eclipse atlatl's special attack, Eclipse.

The eclipse atlatl has a special attack, Eclipse, costing 50% special attack energy and requiring the full eclipse moon armour set to use. The attack itself is magic-based and performed at melee distance, with a 50% accuracy bonus. Atlatl darts do not need to be equipped to perform the special attack.

If the target was inflicted with a burn, such as from the armour's set effect or the special attack of the Burning claws, Arkan blade, or Scorching bow, the special attack will consume the remainder of the burn damage it would have dealt to the target, increasing the player's max hit by that number and their minimum hit by half of that number, capped at 50.

For example, if the burn effect would have dealt 6 more damage before dissipating, the special attack would increase the player's max hit by 6, and their minimum hit by 3, for that attack.

Set effect

A player triggers the Eclipse set effect.

When all pieces of the eclipse moon armour set are worn, the player gains the Eclipse set effect, granting successful attacks with the eclipse atlatl a 20% chance to inflict a Burn on any non-immune target. During player versus player combat, the Atlatl has an attack speed of 3.

While burning, the target takes 10 burn damage over the course of 40 ticks or 24 seconds (Seen as 1 damage every 4 ticks or 2.4 seconds). Each burn has an individual duration and up to five burns can be applied to a target at a time. At maximum stacks, existing burns must expire before a new burn can be applied.

On average, this results in targets taking roughly 2 burn damage per successful hit of the weapon. However because burn deals damage over time, damage is lost if the burn is cleared or the target dies.

Due to the Eclipse atlatl's unique scaling with melee strength, traditional best-in-slot ranged gear such as Masori armour performs worse than (often cheaper) alternatives such as the Eclipse moon armour. Since the atlatl still benefits from ranged accuracy, melee strength can be sacrificed for ranged accuracy for an overall higher damage output.

As the accuracy is largely dependent on the opponent's defence, the player can prioritise melee strength bonus when fighting monsters with very low defence, like the Gemstone Crab. In these situations the Atlatl synergises quite well with the Dragon battleaxe special attack as it can give a notable strength increase. It can even be used without stat restoration with only a minor loss in overall damage. A player should start to prioritise accuracy when the Atlatl's accuracy falls below 55%; An example being an enemy like the Brutal Black Dragon (258 defence, 50 Standard ranged defence) , where the Amulet of Fury starts to provide more benefit from accuracy boosts than the pure strength bonus from the Amulet of Strength.

The gear setup shown here should typically provide the highest damage output against low to medium defence monsters when used in combination with Super strength potions, Ranging potions and Rigour. For enemies immune to burn damage, or against Slayer targets, swapping out the armour for more strength bonus can result in better damage.

Trivia

  • Originally, the set effect was slated to be named Searing Blows, but was changed for unknown reasons. As a result, the names of the set effect and special attack both share the name Eclipse.
  • An atlatl is a type of spear-thrower — a device used to throw darts and javelins at a greater velocity compared to throwing them by hand.
  • Contrary to popular belief, the word "Atlatl" is pronounced "Aht-laht," not "at-lat-ul" due to the word coming from the Nahuatl language.
