Bone bolts are ammunition that can be bought after completion of The Lost Tribe quest. They can only be used with the Dorgeshuun crossbow, a popular choice for training ranged due to its faster speed than regular crossbows. Unlike other ammunition, it requires 28 Ranged to equip.
Due to their low price and ease of access from Nardok's Bone Weapons, having a base price of only 3 coins each, bone bolts are generally considered a very cost-effective method of training Ranged at lower levels. Assuming non-stop use of the Dorgeshuun crossbow on rapid, the player can fire 1,500 bolts per hour, which only costs 10,500 coins per hour if buying the bolts from the Grand Exchange.
Despite the bone bolts being roughly equivalent to iron bolts in ranged strength, the Dorgeshuun crossbow's faster attack speed means that its damage-per-second output when firing bone bolts is comparable to that of a regular crossbow firing steel or even mithril bolts (depending on the player's exact Ranged level).
If not buying the bolts from the Grand Exchange, buying bone bolt packs is recommended in order to save costs, since the cost per bolt can rapidly increase when buying the bolts individually. As with other bolts, their ranged strength is higher than most arrows with similar level requirements. The Dorgeshuun crossbow is 1 tick (0.6 seconds) slower to fire than shortbows, which balances out the higher strength of the bolts.
Despite not being made of metal, bone bolts do function with Ava's devices obtained from the completion of Animal Magnetism.
